What is the best time of year to get a deal/buy a new bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is the best time of year to get a deal/buy a new bike?

I'd like to surprise Mrs. NoWhammies by taking her out and buying her a new bike. I'd like to maximize my purchasing power (obviously) so I'm wondering if there is a best time of the year to buy a new bike. I'm thinking towards the end of the summer (October/November) might be best since the LBS will be wanting to get rid of any summer stock. Thoughts? Comments?

I don't know about other brands, but for Trek it is usually this month-July...they'll still have some of this year's bikes into the new year, but I got a really deep cut on my Domane during their July sale two years ago.

Your mileage may vary.

I'm getting a madone on close out with full Ultegra for 1900. It was a demo model but it looks flawless.

Best prices are when the model year is finishing up. But in my experience, the sizes and models they have left are limited, so you may not be able to get what you want.

Last year, I think it was the 6th of August when I saw a $510 bicycle get marked down to $275. I think it was a Monday so I'd say the start of the 2nd week of August.

One of the local Cannondale dealers had their Synapse 105 ALs marked down from $1,680 to $1300. The 61cm is no longer available, as it's in my garage. The sale just stared at the beginning of July.

Sounds like it varies among manufacturers and dealers, and I'm pretty sure it usually only applies to whatever's in stock.

I bought my Cervelo in lease July or early August, two years ago. Di2 for the price of mechanical. Just before the new group and frames came out.

It seems like brands will offer discounts in a staggered fashion. Back in April, Specialized had a decent sale, then a few weeks later Giant had one. IIRC, Trek had theirs later. So if you have an eye on a specific brand, just keep your eyes open for sales anywhere as they will signal a following wave of sales. Sign up for mailing lists so that you don't miss out -- I generally loathe doing so, but it's very easy to not pay attention to a 1-2 week sale and miss sale opportunities for at least a full season.

Doesn't seem to be any real pattern. I got my Specialized in late July for 15% off (ok not great), and I got my 2017 Colnago in late June 2018 for 52% off (new, not a demo). Perhaps the latter isn't a great data point since the bike was last year's model, but there is is as a data point anyway.

I've watched bike price patterns and really haven't noticed any. Some LBSs around here sell 2 year old models for full MSRP and won't budge, which is bizarre to me.

Hmm. Interesting. I guess the thing to do is just keep checking in at the LBS and see when the bike I have my eye on goes on sale.
