Need a bike for college. Any suggestions?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

craigslist or bikesdirect.com... Craigslist is the better option if you dont mind getting a used bike. Do your research about size, components, etc... Keep posting here you'll get advice...

If you're just trying to go around Campus then definitely don't go for anything too nice or new/flashy.

Like others will say/have said already: Craigslist is the place to be. If you're fairly fit, look into getting a single speed or maybe a fixed gear bike (Less maintenance to worry about)

Just for on campus riding then get a used bike. You probably want a bike with at least 8 gears because UC Irvine is hilly. If it's IRvine valley college then it's all flat you can probably get away with a fixie. The choices are almost unlimited--road bikes, comfort bike, city bike, mountain bike, and everything in between. I see a lot of twenty-somethings riding around in these fixed gear city/urban bikes. Go to your local Performance Bike store and look at their selection. There are at least two in your area. Sand Canyon Cyclery is another one very close by to UCI or IVC.

If you're just doing light rides around town, get a hybrid with flat bars. You'll be more upright and a bit more stable which is easier for carrying stuff.

Nashbar catalog shows a Schwinn Willy 7 speed cruiser bike for $194.00

fenders & rear rack. 7 speeds so it's a step up from a single speed. upright riding for bopping 'round campus. cheap and a bit not-hot so hopefully won't be a theft risk.

https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...category=10000

https://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-Willy-.../dp/B004UM79K8

also target had a cool looking drop bar single speed a few months ago - you might check your local Target for something off the shelf. otherwise check out your local bike shops that sell used bikes and get something resembling a straight bar road bike. lot's of old Schwinns getting their drop bars swapped out for straight ones here in Cambridge, MA

Graduated from UCI a few years ago. It is on the verge of a hipster revolution - you'll definitely want a Kilo with an Aerospoke

Honestly, I'd go with a used bike from craigslist over that. You could get much better components for $300 used.

I would NOT recommend you buy a bike from Bikes Direct unless you know what you're doing. These come in a box and needs assembly and a tune up right after. Yes, it's light assembly but you still need to know a few things and have some tools.

Go to your local Performance Bike shop, Sand Canyon Cyclery, Two Wheel Planet, etc. These are literally minutes from the center of Irvine. They have the bikes you're looking for. You will also get to speak to a knowledgeable person who can recommend a good bike for your needs.

If you are set on buying from Bikes Direct then I would suggest this: https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...ington1_IX.htm

Talk to a live person or email them before ordering.

If you can find this bike, it is perfect for commuting: https://www.performancebike.com/bikes..._20000__400307.

I bought it last spring for $180 on sale, and it worked great for me!
