Bicyclist-Motorist Communication Survey (Course Project - Please help!)

Hi All,

I’m trying to collect some feedback regarding the perceptions and needs related to the topic of ‘Bicyclist-Motorist Communication’. Yes, the description is a bit vague and intentionally so, but if you’re intrigued, then you’re probably also a great candidate for the quick (and fun!) 10-question survey.

Go here to take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XSR6SNH

If you’re wondering, this is for an Industrial Design course that I’m taking this semester. I know everyone is especially busy these days, therefore I will be especially grateful for your time and effort. So that I can make the most of your input, please complete the survey ASAP and *BEFORE* Tuesday, February 22nd at the latest.

You’re welcome to contact me with questions/comments. Also, if you happen to know someone that might like to take the survey, please feel free to (discreetly/non-SPAMily) pass along the link. Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
-Ben

When I answer "Other" your quiz doesn't register that as a response. So I cannot complete your survey.

Ditto.

Long story short - IMO such a device is not necessary. My arms work well enough.

done, but I would like to add that I would hate to see something like this become mandatory. use it or not depending on your circumstances, but it is not for everyone.

I checked that I would prefer it on the bike, but in reality, I wouldn't use something like this.

I ride in dark enough conditions to consider some sort of bicycle turn signal.

That and your typical driver doesn't know what the hand signals mean anymore.

*raises left hand to signal a right turn* *motorist waves*

I think there might be room for a product. Hand signals are less effective at night.

I already invented my own product. Go to K-mart, Wal-Mart or a scuba diver shop and buy a velcro wrist watch strap. Take a small blinkie like PBSF and put a little glue at the end of the clip, insert wrist watch strap and wear it.

It is pretty effective when you stick your arm out for a turn or lane change.

And if you really want to get respect, use a blue blinkie.

that's sig-worthy.

The reasons we don't have turn signals on bikes is that bikes aren't wide enough that they make any sense to anyone. I have a blinky on my left seat stay which is out where a turn signal might be. I have considered putting a carbide blade on a pole 3' out from the side of my bike, maybe I could have one on both sides and then the turn signals would be effective. Plus I could use the bike for my high wire act.

One of the above posters mentioned one of the biggest issues with turn signals on a bicycle, the width of the bicycle is so small that for the most part turn signals are rather pointless.

There is a product on the market that resolves that issue. They mount on the handlebars (the widest part of the bike). I have a set and I like them, I am not sure how effective they are during the day, during the day, I use hand/arm signals.
I use my Winkku signals at night and I feel much safer making a left turn across four lanes of traffic with them, rather than using a arm signal at night.

The Winkkus appear to be fairly well made, I have owned mine for over a year now.
