Sadly it seems since Project 96 that US interest in track (at least at a high level) has fallen off, at least for men. I wonder if Phinney would trade his Polkadot jersey from the tour for an Olympic medal on the track? I doubt it. The dream of something like Roubaix seems to eclipse everything else, no matter how unlikely.

I'm not sure about other countries, but here for a domestique to swap to track, they'd probably be taking a big pay cut (not saying they are getting fat paid as is) and most can't afford to do that.

Good analysis Morelock, a lot of past conditioning to live off while building speed. Phil has shown a nerdy side, see some of his climbing bike weight weenie videos. So I'm sure going Aero geek should come naturally.

This may help the Track program in spite of itself. Phil has a pretty broad audience that is anything but Track centered and is totally independent (so USA Cycling can't mismanage it lol). Might be something to build on.

You make good points.

I wonder if Phinney would trade his Polkadot jersey from the tour for an Olympic medal on the track? I doubt it.

Maybe not for one medal, but recall that Phinney was the Enduro that hung with the Sprinters in the Kilo:

The day after winning the 4k pursuit, Taylor Phinney wins gold in the 1k and sets another new American record.

A day after setting a new American record and winning gold in the individual 4 kilometer pursuit, Taylor Phinney set another American record on his way to winning the 1K time trial. Phinney's time of 1:01.641 was a split second faster than the previous U.S. record of 1:01.825, set by Erin Hartwell, in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1995. The world record of 58.875 was set by Arnaud Tournant in La Paz, Bolivia in 2001.

2009:

2010:

If Hoy enjoyed 6 Olympic Gold medals and one Silver, how many might Phinney (the prodigious child of 2 Olympians) have won across endurance (mass start, Omnium, IP, TP) and sprint events (kilo, keirin)?

Good points, but you also have to think spending 4 years at a time trying to peak for one event is a hard thing to do mentally. Also, for Phinney, personal glory definitely wouldn't be near guaranteed with no IP (or Kilo) in 12/16 games. His best bet would have probably been TP, but that's putting a lot of faith in finding 3 other prodigies. Keirin possibly with the right focus, but both it and even more the omnium require a healthy dose of luck as well as skill.

Hoy was obviously brilliant (as well as Kenny) but when we compare the two we really just go right back to the culture surrounding the athlete. Big difference from 2008+(04 really) in GB and the USA. My guess is Phinney likely would have been lucky to medal. Not to say that his road career has been easy either.

*speaking just in terms of Olympic medals. If you count WC / big events, it's almost a sure thing Phinney would have been VERY highly decorated.

https://velobike.squarespace.com/wahoo-adapter

Saw this today browsing the net. I know a few people had discussed it and seen a few in the wild a while back under some nat team riders, seems like it's going into a sort of production.

Hey Guys, Glenn here from Velobike.co.nz. Yep, we are developing a fixed gear adapter for Wahoo Kickr smart trainers. These are specific for wahoo. Each brand of direct drive trainer has slightly different dimensions and limitations that require the adaptor to be designed around. That being said, we are developing another adaptor that may be suitable with the Elite Drivo - we will require to test it first.

The Wahoo Kickr fixed gear adaptors will be available to purchase shortly. Please use the contact form to reserve one.

This is wonderful!

Any chance you can post pics or a video of a Kickr with your mod with a bike?

I'm generally positive to lukewarm on no-name parts from China, but that is downright scary.

Same here. I'm just wondering how long it will be until we hear of some fixie hipster showing up to a track with these.

As I see it (and I hate the hanblebar/stem solution - too parallel to floor, no thin, etc.)
Not sure it will be better than the good old champion model.

Looks like Gaimon suffered a pretty serious crash on the track. Hope his recovery goes as well as possible.

Damn.

I wonder why he was riding mass start? Real talk, I would imagine that if he were on the long team for TP/IP, then he'd be focused on that and not risk injury in a mass start race. I really can't see a new-to-the-track pro roadie having the chops to hang in World Cup, Pan Am, or Olympic bunch races. So, why risk it?

I have zero detail on his crash but, maybe this also ties into my thing about how P/1 roadies maybe not having the experience to ride in P/1 track races immediately upon taking up the sport.
