Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

if it is required you better get interested. The best way is to do a little bit at a time. Like eating an elephant - one bite at a time.

Paper log books are fine, but the times are moving to electronic. I’ll wait til my daughter can type and then have her input the info. Heard it builds lots of character, kind of like a mechanical watch.

But I have small collections of both the large keywound models from the first 10 years, and the later 'railroad' pocket watches from the 40s and 50s.

The great thing is they're so inexpensive on Ebay that I have no qualms about applying my meager mechanical skills to servicing them, which is good since a professional service starts north of $150.

That's a faceted crystal, which can make reading the time a little funny - at Noon and 6 the hour hand doubles from certain angles.

OK, but go easy on her. Be especially careful when you teach her how to use a can opener on a can of beans.

Digital watches and clocks suggest greater accuracy than they often actually deliver. For example, my wife's digital alarm clock gains time, so that between resettings for DST, it's usually at least 5 minutes fast.

With analog, you answer "What time is it?" with replies like "Quarter after 5" or "10 of 6" or such. Digital, you answer to the minute, even if it's not right.

Wouldn't mind seeing that collection some day! I have a box of analogue watches, but only one vintage. It is the watch my mom gave my dad either when or shortly after they got married.

One day want to change out the Spiedel for a proper leather strap.

Leather straps are relatively cheap, and widely available. Metal bracelets eat away at the lugs, so the sooner the better.

And if you spring for a new crystal at the same time, you'll be AMAZED how just those two things will make the watch look new,

most likely the Pawls in the freehub seating. They need a little light oil. Use your Google fu to find out how to oil them . You can do eeeett!

I vaguely remember having a freehub issue maybe eight years ago and this might be similar. Doesn't above require you to take things apart, though?
