Metric century...or not?
Went out early this morning from my home in the suburbs to the southwest end of the city to pick up a set of fixer-upper 7800 shifters, but that's another story for another time. Going by my Cateye Strada Slim bike computer it appeared that I'd ridden 101.5 km--the longest ride I've done. Cool. Metric century. However, out of curiosity I checked on this site:
How far did I run? - Create running maps with On The Go Map
Yeah, I'm still stuck in the 2000's. No GPS. No Strava. Anyway, it showed I'd only ridden 98.1 km.
So what say you? Count or not?

Which measurement is truly correct? I'd count it. Marathoners run for more than 26.2 miles in a race as the organizers measure the shortest possible route to exactly 26.2 miles; the runners of course don't run that way (eg. cut through every corner).

Within the margin of instrument error for a non-precision instrument like a non-GPS bike computer.
I say it counts. Put it this way, if a cop tried to give you a ticket for only 2% fast in a 100 km/h zone, you'd probably have a good chance of beating it in court as being within the combined margin of error of your speedometer and the cop's radar. Which is why cops giving tickets for 2 km/h over the limit are rare indeed.
So I say 98.1 km is close enough on your computer.

nope, it don't count.
I use strava and I often go around the block to make SURE I'm over my target mileage, even with GPS error. with that said, I look at daily mileage because I'm forced to break it up due to work, commuting, cooking dinner/caring for the kid. so if my daily goal is 30 miles, it's usually on 3 rides. to me, the daily total matters, especially as your rides get longer.
So quick, go ride around the block!

The maps/GPS are not perfect. They are sometimes in error. A Cateye computer however is rock solid mileage.

This is what I was thinking. Do people really think manually inputting a route by memory into a map website after a ride has less margin for error than a cycling computer?

Actually, my wife asks me all the time how the heck I can remember the route I take. I don't know how I remember. I just do. I started doing this when I began running more than 10 years ago. It was easier than getting into a car and driving the route to see the distance. But I digress.

And.... I got to thinking. As long as the mileage is ridden in the same day... it counts. And with a metric day being 100 hours... the OP might still have time to ride the difference. Just a thought.

I would count it. When I ran track we frequently called the 1600m the mile. In casual conversation it is accepted that 1500m and 1650y is a "mile" in swimming https://swimswam.com/tsc-mysteries-why-is-a-swimming-mile-only-1650-yards/

My friends wouldn't give someone .01, you either do it or not with them so I always put some in the bank. Also, as long as you do your riding in the same 24 hour period it counts, it's not a "second ride".
I do long distance motorcycle riding (IBA) and you are ok to stop and sleep if you can figure the time,speed and distance, that is part of the game. Be sure and set your alarm if you do!
