Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

cracked carbon bottle cage /sigh

Bought 2 of the Speedplay nanogram ultra cages because, well, they look so darn cool.

Out on my first ride with them and cracked one.

I knew I had to be careful with them, but after a 1000m ascent I was tired and reached down to replace my bottle without looking. *CRACK* Grrrrrrrrrr

I've repaired it with some electrical tape, but I have to say, I am NOT a fan of these brittle water bottle cages. Cannot recommend to a friend!

Electrical tape? I'd replace it with a new cage. Water bottles have ended several pro's seasons.

I've had two Arundel Dave-O CF water bottle cages since 2010. No problems yet.

It's not a break - it's a hairline crack. Pretty sure I can't return something that I broke. I got it at competitivecyclist.com, so correct me if I'm wrong. If I can return it, cool. But seems unlikely.

I use 2 carbon bottle cages (Planet X) and I always "reach down without looking", as you call it.
I never have any problem.
Carbon shouldn't crack that easily.
You shouldn't have to "be careful with them", as you say.

There are three options here:
1) This specific bottle cage was badly constructed and should be replaced.
2) The whole line of these specific bottle cages is badly engineered and should be recalled.
3) You somehow broke it be taking out the bottle in a wrong fashion.

They do look extremely thin and long, don't they?
I vote for option 2.

Call them and see. It's the only way to find out for certain. I agree with AdelaaR -- there's no good reason you should have to baby a carbon (or any other non-metal material) bottle cage.

Broke it during only normal use? Sure you can return. CC is also very liberal with their return policy... send 'em an email. As said above, you shouldn't have to baby these things.. I have cheap ($9 from WalMart!) Bell carbon cages that are on their 3rd bike and umpteenth-thousand miles, I wouldn't expect any less from a much more expensive cage.

If you'd rather try to fix it you can try using "Loctite Super Glue Professional Liquid", it's like Crazy Glue but stronger. I found it at a supermarket.

I sent CC an e-mail. We'll see what they have to say. If they offer to replace or exchange, I will be extremely impressed with them.

At this point, I think I should try a different cage altogether. I can't be constantly worried about the durability of my cages - not drinking because I'm afraid of hurting my cages - while on a ride.

You did not break it. It broke due to a manufacturing defect. As long as you did not abuse it, you should be fine asking for a refund or exchange.

Give CC a call andsee.

I have arundel Mandible on two of my bikes. They look fragile but they are tough...and sexy looking.

Bottle cages should have enough flexibility to stand up to normal use. Probably a manufacturing defect.

All cyanoacrylates are brittle and break easily under stress.

This is why I won't spend stupid money on carbon cages. Specialized E-cage (aluminum) have worked for 3 bikes now. $7 each. Ive had one on a mountain bike for about 10 years, never an issue.

SS would be a better choice, but they are too spendy for me!

Don't mind me, I'm just cheap

Quick update. CC said it sounded like a manufacturer's defect since they haven't had any issues with those cages. Not only are they taking them back, but they are even paying for the return shipping. I decided to return them both and try a pair of the new Arundel Mandibles.

I'm super impressed with CC's customer service. From now on, I'm checking with them first on all cycle-related online purchases.
