Frameset suggestions?

Hello,

Planning on building a gravel bike this year, but wanted to see if ya'll know of any framesets that would be good for me to look at. Seriously considering the Jamis Renegade steel at $850.

This is what I'm looking for:
1). 40mm or more tire clearance
2). 3 + water bottle cages
3). Steel or carbon fiber frame

Any suggestions?

Dave

Dang, that's like 90% of the gravel bikes out now. Pick your poison.

Here are a few steel frames with carbon forks. Different geometry on them, but all meet your list. All are more expensive than the Jamis(which is a strong deal) but maybe one of these matches something you want more than the Jamis.

$1300 All City Cosmic Stallion- https://allcitycycles.com/bikes/cosmic_stallion

$1285 Fairlight Secan- https://fairlightcycles.com/product/...v=79cba1185463

$1700 Otso Warakin- https://otsocycles.com/products/warakin-frameset

Add the Black Mountain Cycles "Road Plus" to your list.

I could have said it has to have fork mounted bottle stays. Then we'd be down to 5% of gravel bikes out now lol.

That All City paint job is incredible. Frameset is top notch. Might have to find one to test ride!

With roughly similar geometry, stack/reach params, perhaps ...

Velo-Orange Piolet -- 4130 double-butted chromoly steel; 29x2.4", 27.5x3.0" (M, L, XL), or 26x2.4" (S); 3 water bottle mounts on frame, 2 on fork blades. About $725 for the frame+fork.

Kona Rove ST -- Kona proprietary butted chromoly steel; 650x47mm; 3 water bottle mounts on frame. About $600-700 for the frame+fork.

Kona Rove LTD (2018 MY) -- Reynolds 853 butted chromoly steel, with carbon fork; 650x47mm; 3 water bottle mounts on frame. (Not in the 2020 MY line-up. And fairly spendy as compared to the Jamis entry considered in the OP. Was ~$1500 for frame+fork.)

The difference between the Renegade and the Cosmic Stallion is pretty small. The price isn't though. You'd do well with either.

The Geo is pretty similar. Without looking at a Geo chart, looks like the Jamis top tube slopes down more by the seat tube, so it might be more comfortable to ride.

Couldnt find a frame weight on the all City, but based on the complete weight, I think the Jamis is a little lighter too.

$450 is a LOT for an awesome paint job. Form over function a little bit there. The all City is like a piece of art.

Having seen and ridden both in person I can tell you there is almost no difference in geo, fit, construction, or weight. Literally the biggest difference is the paint job, like you said, and the cost.

Maybe they are built in the same factory? Cool that you rode both. What was your impression of the ride?

Both are typical quality steel bike ride feel.
