Peugeot Record Du Monde
Does anyone know anything about this bike? A friend picked up one and can't find any information about it.

T-mar will know but my first guess is that 'Record du monde' is not a model but some slogan printed on the bikes. What is stamped in the BB?
Whatever the answer is, i'll include it in my peugeot site!

Unless your friend got very lucky or paid alot of money, the bike is probably a UO-8. Look for half-chrome forks (no chrome for AO-8 economy model), cottered steel crankset, "claw-hung" Simplex Prestige rear derailleur, serrated steel rims, and "rat trap" pedals.

Here's a photo of it.
It has the half-crome forks, a Simplex derailleur, and serrated rims. I honestly don't know what "rat trap" pedals are. Or what the crank set is. I'm just embarking on my interest in bicycles and their components.
Is it a higher end model? Cause he would like to know if he scored at the dump.

Looks like a UO8 to me. Crankset looks the same but on your photo the cranks doesnt seem clottered. Year 1975 probably.
Clean it, restore it, polish all the metal/chrome and ride it.
edit: did i see this bike on ebay? There are lots more pictures of it. I think this bike will look awesome when refurbished well!

Check the serial number; leading digit should be a "2," for 1972, or a "3," for 1973. By 1974, they had gone to stem shifters. The crank does look like cottered steel to me; it's hard to make out the cotter. The graphics are definitely early 1970s, and I think the yellow color came to the U.S. in late 1972 or early 1973.

I concur. Early 1970s UO8. I agree with Jeohn E about the crankset about the being a steel, cottered version. It's just hard to see the cotter pin.

I think it would be great if Pogue and others could develop a flow chart for identifying old Peugeots... and we post it as a sticky. I’m not being facetious.

However, that little generator/light thingie mounted on the left fork stay (assuming it still works), is pretty cool, and is well worth the rescue of the bike.

You know, I like the flowchart idea... how to id an old Peugeot. Run 'em through it step by step, part by part, decal by decal, out they come with year and model... of course, it'd prolly be easier just to ask.
I'm in line with Jon E and Tmar on the id, a fact which fails to surprise me, for some reason...

Yeah the ID system is pretty easy to code but the hard part are the detailed pictures.. I need macro shots (second best are cropped images from whole bike shots) of decals of seat tube, top tube, downtube, headset, fork, stem, etc etc. But for a start i saw the pattern Peugeot used on its bikes is less exotic. The checkered one, the 3 color stripes one, the 'modern' 90s tribal pattern, etc etc.
back on topic. Did this bike come with a rear.. 'luggagecarrier' (? i don't know the english word for it, 'bagagecarrier/drager' in Dutch) by default or is it mounted afterwards.

Blue Order, hah. Yeah. It is, I was thinking of swiping it up at the time. I know so many people read these forums I didn't want to make it obvious it's on EBay. Cats out of the bag, and I must apologize for being selfish in this instance.
I Emailed the guy to see what's on the BB so I could at least add to the Peugeot site in the making. Maybe the seller will Email the info back, it'd be nice.
As for that rack, easily added later on. I don't think any of those ten speeds came with a luggage rack standard. If that's what you mean, leunkstar

hahaha, yeah - it's a very nice paint job and that color is dazzling! If I find one local, I'm going to be sure to snag it up.

The best clue as to whether a rack/carrier is factory supplied is to look for frame mounted brackets/brazed-on fittings where the rack mounts to the seat stays. On boom era road bikes these are a very good indicator that the bicycle probably came with a rack. These fittings prevent the rack from slipping while carrying a heavy load, a condition that is common, and dangerous, with racks that clamp to the seat stays.

Just for the record here (and to inflame Mr. Peugeot, if he so happens to be reading), I once rejected a women's UO-8 from the LBS. It was free, and they said if I wouldn't take it, it'd be chucked in the trash.
I said "Chuck it in the trash...that's where a UO-8 belongs."
No offense to the Francophiles intended.

My guess, for what its worth, is '73. Still has the original cable housing, white soft plastic finger grips, even gumwall tires! But the rack is an add-on. If Peugeot put it on, it'd be level. The generator light looks to be the rub on the side of the tire kind, which worked pretty well, unless your wheel was out of true, and then you looked like some sort of low rider cop going down the street with a pulsating head light. And the gumwalls are flat, too, just like always!

The rack is the venerable Swiss Pletscher "mousetrap" aftermarket unit, one of my favorites of all time. (I have one on my own UO-8.)
I concur with Sunday driver regarding the 1973 model year. Any earlier, no yellow color. Any later, stem shifters.
I can assure you that UO-8s do not belong in the trash. Mine is a delightful commuting and transportation machine that I can leave locked up and unattended, with the full expectation that it will still be there when I return.
