Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The question I have is, considering all the ailments and germs these crumb snatchers normally pass around, along with the accompanying fevers, how will medical staff be able to determine what's covid and what's not? Most may be resistant to covid (from what I hear) but they all have to get tested once they get even a cold, no?

Or a stubbed toe, or an itch, or...

I don’t see how this was supposed to work. If it’s important enough for kids to go to school that we’re willing to prolong the epidemic and kill people, we might as well open up and deal with that fallout. My memory of grade school is mostly misery and not much learning.

Well you must have learned a little something. The forum proves you can read and write.

Unless they're one of those who never show symptoms but still breathe out virus. And since we only test the sick.....

If I had to rely on school for that...

I broke the metrics on every spoken and written language test administered as a child. If it hadn’t been for school I would have read more and developed that more. School gets no credit for that. It does get considerable credit for my various mental issues, though.

I was also the kid bringing up imaginary numbers in third grade when told we can’t do square roots of negative numbers.

Most of what school gets credit for is Crispus Attucks and a few other details. It did traumatize me a great deal in many large and small ways.

Speaking of distance learning and the kids being on the computer...

My son is always looking at Lego sets and/or Star Wars stuff online - it's his addiction. Anyway, he's so pathetic at hiding his browsing habits - he's always frantically clicking and walking away from the computer when I enter the room - that I've been tempted to teach him the magic of Alt-Tab.

And there you have the problem with aiming for the Lowest Common Denominator. Hell, even aiming for the median! You leave the folks at the right end of the curve out of it, bored and frustrated.

Rotating cohorts is doctrine for health care staff in a pandemic and it's the right way to handle a situation where people have to be exposed. And yes, to do it right, they will have to test the **** out of them, which they almost certainly won't. Do these kids really have to go back to physical school? That's ultimately a political question.

I hated school passionately. I would have dropped out if not for fear of my father. Some of my most miserable memories are of school. When I found out I could graduate early if I had enough credits I switched to a general major and took summer classes and graduated @16. Then came alcohol.

The issue with whether and how to send kids back to school this year is that there is NO GOOD ANSWER and each option kinda sucks in some way.

I ventured out for some necessary shopping today and am amazed that after 5 months, people still can’t wear a mask right. I couldn’t get done and get home quick enough.

Well and as I was told as a young'un while having these issues with school, school is primarily extended child-care to get kids out of parents' hair. And a lot of parents were counting on the spring semester being a temporary one-off and getting back to the routine in the fall, and some have insisted on it.
