Insulting Ebay Seller - Pooey-Stinko - and I mean it.
That insulting arrogance of this listing really made me angry. I tried to report the listing but Ebay would not allow me to do so, nor was I allowed to even contact the seller. The Ebay item number is 114391229242. Five grand for an Olmo - and I the seller (vernbren) seems to think that insulting potential buyers is a strong marketing strategy. Anyway, here is the full content of the message...
so to prove my point about how poorly Olmo values are , I will set a ridiculous price for this bike and let buyers make low ball offers or insults as I call them (if any even dare to.) If any come in I will share them on my item description with user names withheld so as to not violate their privacy. Prove me wrong!!
About this bike: Either the Super Competition or Competition is the model. Whatever the model name, it was Olmo's top of the line model with all Campy components pantographed (except the derailleurs). No other Italian bikes made during the 1970s-80s offered this degree of customization for their bikes and made them standard equipment. A few other Italian made bikes may have offered engraved parts but you had to pay extra to have them included with your order.

Seller should have just started the auction at the price he wants for the bike or set a reserve price and have the auto feature reject offers below his reasonable price. No need for all the other drama as it is a time waister and maybe judged as insulting.

Seems like he’s been trying to sell it and frustrated by the soft market for vintage bikes. I didn’t get any real arrogance from that brief description, just a guy venting. Still several levels below the guy a couple of years ago who posted a YouTube video of him destroying a couple of bikes with a baseball bat because nobody would pay him what he thought they were worth.
eBay is pretty weird now, and IMO almost useless, for the bike market. You have people trying to sell bikes, wanting to cover the 15+% in fees, etc and still make a little money and buyers looking for good deals. The only time the two meet is the uninformed or lazy seller, opening the door for disappointment in the product.

Wow, that price!
Kind of like another guy on Ebay with some really nice bikes but crazy prices. We talked a bit about his Lemond pricing and he was plenty cordial and asked for a lot of info. He have then repriced a couple to a still very high, but not insane price. But he changed that later and went back to crazy prices. I doubt he ever really sells anything but he sure does have some nice stuff.

It is a bike shaped object, no pedals that would turn it into a bicycle.
bike shows neglect, note the rust on the brake chrome parts.
Olmo was a storied brand, by this time only a nameplate made by a mfg.
the pantographing was done to regain cache, lost decades earlier.
seatpost is dangerously high.
frame was not properly dressed prior to assembly to avoid damage to the seatpost.
seller is frustrated and lazy.
Indicates he is bored with vintage bikes, wants to cash out and ticked he missed the price peak.

Randy, why are you letting this seller’s listing make you angry on a beautiful early fall weekend? The seller has not insulted you personally. Neither you, nor anyone else, has to pay the asking price, or any price at all. You could have just posted the listing as a “Get a load of this!” without the drama of your puzzling-to-me sense of outrage.
I think a lot of people sell on eBay because they lack the people skills to be successful in person — Art of the Deal and all that. It is what it is.
P.S. If I had been eBay, I wouldn’t have let you contact the seller either, just to rant at him. But anyone can contact any seller over a listing so I call BS on that.

Honestly, I am interested in whether he posts those offers and what they might be...
For me, I have really had only one to two bad experiences as a buyer, neither of which became rude and we worked it out. I have a mind for what I'll pay and they have a mind on what they take. I have not had a seller's experience as yet, but I imagine you see all types.
Just an aside about a good seller...received a frame that was not like the pictures and an item was stuck. He was not sure why the item's pictures didn't match (maybe a co-op or someone in family?)...he offered me a refund and to keep the frame and just pay shipping. I said that was too much from his side and made him refund less so he had a bit of money. Great guy and I would buy from him again.
Most of you know the Rossin story, but I recently contacted the seller in Italy about another item and he asked how the Rossin was doing!
Back to the Olmo, if a person wishes to do this, people can bid or ignore I guess...

I found the listing entertaining, not offended at all, if I wanted an Olmo, it’s not my size, I’d be communicating with the guy.

Challenge accepted, vernbren.
Keep in mind that eBay has provided every facility necessary to him to prevent lowballs. He could set a minimum "Make Offer" price. He could take the offer off entirely and leave it as a BIN. He could put it up as an auction starting with the lowest price he'd take.
There are literally three ways he can post this bike and not piss on what others deem fair value for this Olmo. Sellers who take offense to offers shouldn't open themselves to them. Those who can't tolerate the occasional idiot in their inbox need to take a chill pill and learn the science of ignoring time wasters.
This fellow has literally set himself up for the peanut gallery to blow his inbox up with opinions.
-Kurt
P.S.: Isn't this a valuation thread?
"Thanks! We've sent your offer to vernbren.
Your offer: $5.00
Your rudeness has made it to BikeForums.net Classic & Vintage. Lowballing to be the first on the $hit list!
Please allow 1d 0h for a response from vernbren.

He posted a generally irritating ad that you didn't even know existed until someone else got all offended and brought it here.
You insulted him directly and wasted his time.
Turnabout is fair play. This is neither.

Get a load of him trying to unload this 10-year-old, dual-suspension Wal-Mart NEXT MTB for barely less what it retailed for new ($130 was not its MSRP BITD and the latest version is sold at Wal-Mart for $99): https://www.ebay.com/itm/Next-Power-...wAAOSwNmNfKcru
How about his disgusting money grab by trying to upsell an old Murray beach cruiser for $450 by trying to call it a "tribute" to Kobe Bryant? He's trying to profit off a celebrity's death. Yuck.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Kobe-Bryant...0AAOSwdJlfQUV6
There are a couple of other examples, but this guy is no rose.

P.S.: Hazetguy, remove the 8's and you've got it. I hope you will be so kind as to reciprocate

The real punchline is this:
Thanks to the OP's offensensitivity, the seller has received far more views than he would have otherwise. What's more, thanks to a bid that also took time out to inform him that his rudeness landed his ad in bikeforums C&V, he now has every reason to continue, or maybe up the ante.

Here's a VERY interesting Ebay listing, wondering if it's just half of a pair perhaps or inauthentic (yeah, that's it).

Electric bike motor controllers are very prone to this. I've picked up $40 controllers for $10 on Amazon, and $70 controllers for $25 - all depends on whether you find a seller with them.

I read the auction, laughed and didn't buy the bike.

P.S. If I had been eBay, I wouldn’t have let you contact the seller either, just to rant at him. But anyone can contact any seller over a listing so I call BS on that.
First, who said that I was going to rant at hum. You're assumption, and this is all it is, is wrong. My intent was to report the listing and let Ebay decide.
Second, at my age, with all of my life experiences, I rarely, if ever, see any reason to lie, exaggerate or BS. However, because conspitatemus1 did challenge my integrity, the following quote is the exact response that I get, from Ebay when trying to report the item and/or contact the seller...
We're sorry we couldn't find an answer for you. Unfortunately this seller is not able to respond to your question. We suggest reviewing the item again to see if your answer is in the seller's listing.
