What bike is this? (Wes Anderson trailer)

Hi,

I'm looking to get my first "race type"/low handlebars bike as I've only been into BMX and motorcycles before. I will mainly be using it for commuting and general riding but looking to get an exercise bike later on as well.

I was watching the trailer for the new Wes Anderson film and got obsessed with the bike Owen Wilson's character has and thought it would be perfect as inspiration for my first one. I thought I'd ask for help to identify it and parts that may have been altered or switched out.
From what I can gather it looks like it may be a Peugeot Super Sport or something similar but my eyes are too untrained to see any subtleties. My favorite parts/attributes, and the reason I thought it would be perfect is mainly the front headlight, fenders, that small bracket in the back (is there a specific term for those short ones?) and the slightly wider tyres.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

And watch the trailer while you're at it:

Looks like and entertaining move. We will have to watch it full size and really carefully to get some idea of what it might be. There has been talk on Bike Forums of Movie bikes and one of the things that I learned is that the bikes used in movies of times past are often not vintage bikes, but modern bikes made to look vintage so that they can get several bikes that look the same for different scenes or just in case.

That's a good point and one of the reasons I wanted to ask in this thread. Those parts look a lot like the Peugeot ones but I have no idea if anything is switched out...

I know they make multiple for films sometimes but I also know they aren't as strict in indie productions so I was hoping that was the case here.

Interesting, some fairly big names in the "also" list, the likes of Willem Dafoe and Anjelica Huston.

The brake levers look to be first-generation Campy aero levers - you can just make out the little sliding tab. You know, the ones that could be used in either exposed or hidden cable configuration. The bodies have a forward sweep to them - that's why the normal gum hoods look a little bulged out.

Wish I could tell what that thing is between the levers - it almost looks like a cellphone on a mount!

aka, Anderson's "usual suspects."

OP, concentrate on the color orange and you're well on your way.

But please don't flip your bike over to rest on the floor with your non-aero levers cabled up.

Oh, good grief.

Without even looking at the trailer or photo, my first thought was "Is the bicycle perfectly centered in frame with Owen Wilson?"

I hate that I like Wes Anderson movies. It feels so basic.

Is this standard for those Peugeot bikes or upgrades? Like I said.. I know absolutely nothing about bikes yet.

Is the general consensus that it is a Peugeot Super Sport but some parts may be swapped out?

Haha, duly noted. The orange really does make me hyped on it though, maybe because my dad had that orange Crescent championship bike growing up...

Haha yeah, funnily enough he's not centered in any of the shots in this trailer for once! Embrace Wes though, he's the best. Aren't most movies basic, really?

^^^^ I was wondering when someone is gonna try to ID the camera around his neck.

And what is that flat-ish device on the handlebar, that is proportioned just right to be some sort of time-slip smart phone or GPS?

Not My Bike - Too Distant For Me To Facilitate

If you go to the theatre wearing yoga pants and spend the film on your phone, you probably are basic. If you like Wes Anderson films because they are Wes Anderson films, then yeah, you're basic.
You seem to appreciate his work? I don't think you need worry.

As it's to be their first foray into Wes Anderson's drop bar race bike realm,
perhaps the OP might start with the rider from "Rushmore"?

It is noteworthy that as Anderson's film-making has matured and evolved,
so has the quality of the bicycle featured.
Coincidence? I think not.

I'm not a Peugeot expert by any stretch, but the bicycle at the top of the thread has cantilever brakes, and from my initial glance, the Peugeot Super Sport does not. Doesn't mean it hasn't been modified, but I'd not settle on that being the answer just yet.

The tires appear to be cheap Michelin 650b demi-ballooners. So I would guess a low or mid-level domestic French 650b city or camping bike. The bigger manufacturers didn't really export 650b bikes with cantilever brakes to other countries. There are many possible suspects (Manufrance, Motobecane, Peugeot, Automoto, etc...)

Interesting, thanks a lot for the input. What does 650b mean? The movie is filmed in France, is it possible they made them domestically and that they exist within the France region? I'm in Europe so it wouldn't be too hard to get ahold of if that is the case.

650B was a very common french tire size. Probably available in all price ranges. But that's not really going to determine whether you'll like the bike or not.

That cell phone looking thing is likely a notepad, seeing as Owen's a writer.

The decal on the seat tube looks pretty similar to the "Motoconfort" ones, they had a squarish headbadge as well, at some point... The cigarettes are Gaullistes, no doubt about those.

Ha, nice. After searching the internet for quite a bit, I think you may be right about the frame anyway, thanks a lot. I've been in talks with a Portuguese vintage bike vendor who was convinced he could build something similar out of french parts from his shop and ship it so we'll see what comes from that.

I'm pretty sure you have to get those items at an expensive vintage shop while on a life changing trip to Paris in order for them to give you any cred in social gatherings though...
