Vintage Touring Bikes

Hey all,

I’m new to posting here and I wanted to share some pictures and kick around the idea of starting an online shop specialized in vintage touring bikes and equipment. Thanks for looking!

As a vintage touring bike owner, I can't wait to see it.

Please keep in mind that if you want to advertise your shop on Bike Forums that you will need to become a forum sponsor.

An online shop specialized in vintage touring?

Thats second only to a men's roller derby store in terms of niche appeal. You are taking a niche interest- vintage bicycles, and norrowing it further with a really niche activity of touring.
The group that is interested though will be really passionate.
I for one will geek on whatever you toss up online.

I'm in. This is my thing.

Also, I'm broke and and have way too much vintage touring bikes and such already, so I won't actually be buying anything

Is the idea that you would acquire the stuff and flip it via a dedicated portal or that the site would be a marketplace for others to sell stuff and you'd charge a fee on transactions or membership (or provide the service for free) or some other business model?

Isn’t Velo Orange and Rivendale all about vintage touring style?

I think most people looking for vintage gear already hunt on eBay and craigslist for deal.

Nice, though arguably a PX-10 is a racing bike, not a touring bike (not that I care about such distinctions...I both raced and did fully loaded touring for 1000s of miles on my 1972 Raleigh International). BITD we didn't really make such distinctions...we toured on whatever we had available.

I rode Bikecentennial self-contained in 1976 on my 1971 Raleigh Professional Mk III. Racing bikes of that era made great touring bikes!

My brother, Jerry, toured on his 79 Raleigh Professional. When the will is there, the way appears.

Must mentioned that I just built up a new frame with vintage bits from my back stock. Most vintage enthusiast have lots of back stock, are cheap, and very particular.

My favorite frames fall in the sports touring category. These are sort of the bicyclist's equivalent to a good European sport sedan.

And unlike "dedicated" touring bikes, they were fun to ride for the 48-50 weeks a year that you weren't loaded down with camping gear.

Here's mine from a 1974 self-contained tour in the Ottawa valley. (Previously posted under "Show us your Super Course.") OK, not a racing bike, but still....

@LBCwanabe

10 posts on this forum and you can start posting those pics!

Which points out that this thread needs more pix. My Centurion ProTour with mostly original drivetrain, 8 speed cassette, upgraded wheels. It's also my zero bike.

Nope.

Back when we lived in Redwood City, CA, we'd often take La Honda Road in the summer to get to the central coast beaches, and would often pass this barn. I've always had a thing for red barns. This was the first time I'd ridden down La Honda, I was looking for it, and got this shot.

That was my initial thought as well. If the physical shop aspect of it possessed (really, gathered) vintage touring frames--in a range of conditions perhaps--and offered them for sale as framesets or complete builds. Perhaps modern touring-specific framesets that "keep the faith." Full stats on the frames plus wheel compatibilities, tire clearances (27"/700C/650B), caliper/canti/V-brake compatibilities etc. Taking the brain trust of BF and others and putting that accumulated knowledge in one place. Custom rack or frame modification services perhaps? Somehow this is turning into a commercialized @gugie - like Le Grand Atelier. I think I'll stop now.

Super cool- I know this spot! In college my parents decided to move from the chicago burbs to CA, so each time I visited 'home', I spent the entire time exploring central CA during the early '00s.
They lived in both Pescadero and Half Moon Bay, so I was on La Honda Rd and Skyline a bunch when exploring the SantaCruz range.

Just looked it up, apparently it's a historical monument.
