North Cascades National Park Complex Closed

Effective April 3, 2020, North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area, and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area will be closed to all park visitors until further notice. State Route 20-North Cascades Highway, which runs through the park, will remain open to just west of the town of Newhalem. The closure point on the east side will remain at milepost 177 (Early Winters Campground).

I wanted to ride the road this year. I emailed the DOT folks listed on the Hwy 20 page of the DOT website. One of them replied that you could ride the road this year but when I got to Newhalem a security guard blocked the way. I talked to the guard and he said that hundreds of people have been turned around each day.

I was talking to another cyclist and he said his friend rode Hwy20 from the Mazama side. Anybody ride from that side? I know the highway reopens on Tuesday.

MajorPenalty the ride from Mazama up to Washington Pass is beautiful (especially this time of year) and the tiger back down is fast and fun. But the last I heard all lodging including campgrounds is closed.
