SOMA Quad Cages really sketchy...

So I was riding today and I needed to slow down. Obviously, one would pull up on your clips to slow down (or pull your brake), and hey, I have Toshis and Soma Quad Cages. Good way to slow down right?

Wrong.
Thank god I wasn't in an area with any traffic. Destroyed my helmet and bruised my butt and my thumb. Wear a helmet kids, it saves lives.

Wow. I never thought of all things I would eat it because my clips just snapped on me. I've only been using them for about 2 weeks maximum. Do you guys think I have a right to complain to SOMA about this?

ouch, that sucks.

soma stuff seems to be pretty quality and their customer service is pretty decent. you should probably take it to them. 2 weeks is far less than ive ever broken any toe clips - in fact my mks's have stood up about 2 years.

didnt you buy used? probably the person before you has used them alot more than 2 weeks.

I bought them brand new from outsideoutfitters.com... the used SOMA Cages I bought were white and not chrome, so they ended up going on my Kilo...

And to clarify, they broke, then I fell. They did not break as a result of the fall.

Yeah, some other people thought they broke as a result of the fall which is why they say that. I guess I'll give Soma an e-mail to see what's up...

Thats crazy! I've ridden the crap out of mine for about 2 years with no issues. I would definitely get ahold of them!

Once my clip snapped my foot slipped forward a little bit, and since I was up off my seat at that time somehow I just got thrown to the floor...

I've e-mailed them already...
and... dang... I just realized I was wearing my favorite North Face jacket too... now I have to send it in to be repaired...

That's some crap luck! Good thing you are relatively unscathed. I would hope you will at least get a new set out of this. There is no way that should have happened so quickly.

Sorry to hear about the crash. Glad that you are OK. But...

The clip's job is ONLY to hold the strap open so that your foot can enter. Seriously. That's it's only job.

The strap, when tightened snugly, is to keep your foot from moving vertically and laterally, and your shoes with cleats are designed to keep your foot from moving forward and backward. The clip is not designed to bear any load whatsoever...other than that of a limp leather strap. Sorry.

I do pull up on the clips when accelerating.

That sucks though. Good to hear you were not seriously injured.

That's strange, I rode those clips for a long time in Vancouver and Edmonton winters. Lots of salt and opportunity for corrosion and they show no signs of being stressed..

Like Carleton said, the clip is not designed to sustain load. That's the straps job. Make sure your straps snug on your feet!
I wouldn't hesitate to send Soma a polite email explaining your problem just to see what they say. They are a good company, they may send you a new pair. Regardless, good to hear you're ok!

Edit: looks like you already emailed them..

However it may be, I still find it completely unacceptable since I put all my other MKS clips and other cheapie clips through the same "abuse" all the time and none have ever failed on me in a 2 year span....

All those hipster fixed gear riders can pull up on their clips and pull dem mad skydz 4 dayz with clips, so I believe the metal should be able to take a bit of stress at least... hell I wasn't even pulling really hard.

Looks like a design flaw in my opinion.... they shouldn't have punched out the bottom of the clip near where it attaches to the pedal. Hmm maybe a recall or lawsuit in the works?
