Weekend trip with my son to debug for next week's tour.
Rode a sort 20 miles to see how everything works and camped at jubilee college st park. Finally getting some cooler weather here!

Excellent idea with the shake out tour.
any issues with those bags? I would have concerns with weight shifting, bag coming loose etc over the long haul.

My son didn't have a touring bike so he took what he could. I brought a bigger tent so we could both fit.
the main thing I would do differently is bring long sleeves which I was planning on anyway.
going from Peoria Illinois to Baraboo Wisconsin. Leaving next Sunday. The trip back will be off the cuff.

If you are using the Badger State Trail in Wisconsin south of Madison, there were some washouts this year from heavy rain that were repaired, but there are a lot of places where they just put down loose gravel instead of a compacted road grade on the northern part of that trail.
Generally the worst part is about the northernmost 10 mile stretch of gravel that is south of Purcell Road. You can be riding along and suddenly you find yourself hitting some loose gravel. North of Purcell, the route is paved.

also the other thing I learned is to take 2 camp pillows.

Shake out trips are great ideas, even just an overnight somewhere. My biggest frustration with touring was getting flats and occasional broken spoked but I fixed this by making sure I had good tires (I liked the specialized armadillos) and checking my tires for pieces of glass, wire, thorns etc. Spokes are harder to fix and you can avoid that by staying low weight, avoiding hard bumps or using strong wheels. One of my favorite riding days was the road GG out of Clam Lake in Chequamegon Nat'l Forest but that's way up north from you I think.
