MKS GR9 Platform Pedal, good or bad for big sneakers?

I'm usually cruising around in some big sneaks, mostly basketball shoes. I've heard that these pedals are decent for soft-soled shoes, but that the pedals themselves might be a bit narrow. My jordans are big and I want to wear my basketball shoes when riding. MKS GR9 Platform Pedal, good or bad for big sneakers?

Oh yeah, and I'd also like to use some toe clips and straps with these. Opinions?

They would be okay if you don't plan on using clips and straps with them. If you do, your kicks will NOT fit in the strap. I've tried wearing basketball shoes with them (I wear a size 11, I don't know about you but most basketball shoes are pretty wide/thick regardless of size) and they just don't work all that well. If you plan on wearing b-ball shoes to ride a lot I would recommend getting something more along the lines of a BMX pedal.

Opt for Sylvan track or roads. The little bit of added wideness makes a good difference. Excepting cornering clearance, I think GR-9's are mostly good for people under size 10 shoe... I myself thought they were fine at the time but then saw the light when I went back to Sylvans.

Yeah, GR-9s are very narrow and it shows. I would get a cage pedal.

It's good for cornering clearance.

I have them, no problems. Get Soma double gate clips.

Cool recommendation on the Soma Double Toeclip. Are these things the new in-thing that will allow for a bigger shoe in the pedal? I'm about a size 10 shoe and I'm wondering if these would make the narrowish GR9 platform pedal work for me.

I wear a 9.5 and thought the GR9s were too narrow, I'm riding some KKT top runs (nice but heavy!) right now but want to try some sylvan tracks are they really wider than GR9s or is it just that they are more "square" since the GRs taper at the front?

i ride mks gr9 pedals with soma double gates. i often wear nike basketball shoes (nike shox) as well as nike street shoes (nike dunks). i'm size 11, and i've never had even the slightest problem with the shoes not fitting. i think the double gates help keep the straps spread apart.

A little off topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread, and I've already exhausted the search function. I was just curious to know what pedals people would recommend for use with soft sole shoes. I'm thinking about purchasing a pair of gr9's or something with similar cornering clearance. Also, has anyone tried riding with double straps but no clips? Sorry for the newb questions. Just looking for a decent pair of pedals (that won't eat the shoe-soul away) for my size 10 foot. Thanks.

I use GR9s and I wear stan smiths and chuck taylors, and they work great. Sylvans or Streams will cut into your soles.

size 11 to 11.5 with GR9s here and i have a wide foot too and absolutely love these things. Then again I only wear my chucks or my sambas when riding which helps but its impossible to wear athletic shoes with these.

I wear a size 13 and ride with GR9's and have never had any problems in the shoes I normally ride in(which are some pretty light Saucny running shoes) but on those rare occasions i'm wearing my skate shoes they aren't as good but still work fine.

I really wish someone would make a wider flat pedal like the gr-9.

These help spread out the strap for wider feet. The platform on the GR-9 is pretty substantial. Unless ur Sasquatch - you should be all set..

he's right about cutting soles. if it doesn't cut them, it will put an uncomfortable pressure point on the skinny part of the sylvan pedal. I would get gr9

Or get bmx platforms that have reflector holes and mount the clips there, that's what I did and others have as well, works great for me.

i generally dont wear big fatty shoes when planning to ride, but i can fit my size 14 e's (skate shoes i guess) into my mks sylvan track pedals with mks double clips (like above) + single strap without feeling insecure. i wouldnt rock anything without straps for fixed, platform or not. singlespeed sure.

my only gripe with the gr-9s is that fact that they are kinda slippery, yeah but they are platform pedals after all.

Thanks. I was worried about the gr9's being too small. I think that I'll give them a shot. I've heard on other forums that people managed to put their powergrips on the gr9's. Can anyone testify to this, or describe their experience with powergrips?

Thanks again.
