Trainer vs rollers?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

While I completely agree with this, I prefer a trainer. Those just passively pedaling on a trainer are giving away the opportunity for a great workout. With a trainer I can focus "on the workout" itself, and I don't have to be distracted by balancing. I've found that a trainer actually helps me to find a good position and relax more on the bike, even when riding out on the road.

But to get a good workout you need to get a good workout DVD. I really like the Chris Carmichael workouts, and I can achieve some serious training while on a trainer.

Whatever you choose, get on there and make it meaningful. Get a $15 box fan right in front and chest level to keep you cool. Sling a hand towel across your top tube. Keep your water bottles loaded and on the bike, and pedal to make it hurt for a while. But, the workout DVD's are key!

Not really. On rollers, your butt is typically about 5-6 inches higher than when you are riding on the road. Whole different ballgame..

- I didn't want to start a new thread about this. -

While we are talking about rollers, where can I get a new belt for mine? I haven't use my rollers in a couple of months, and I just noticed my belt is broken.

Ebay has one for $16.95. Search "bicycle rollers belt."

I should have been a little more specific and asked if the length and shape is universal. I will check out ebay.

What is the least expensive trainer? There are so many options, it's hard to find differences online. I probably wouldn't notice between different types anyway.

I have used a Tacx trainer for years and two years ago I got rollers. Much harder workouts on rollers. Mind you I do Sufferfest videos on them, up to 100 minutes long. You are forced to focus, both by the rollers and the video. Love them.

Best thing to do is to go on the website of the company who made the rollers. Usually, parts like this ar available that way. If you bought it from a shop, and can still stop in there (like you didn't move away) they may have them.

I prefer rollers with the wind unit as mentioned earlier. I ride with Sufferfest videos and I can drive myself to exhaustion in an hour without falling off. I put the whole setup on skate board wheels so I effectively have free motion rollers and I can stand up and grind on them when simulating hill climbs. I was gonna say they are fun, but then you might think I have no life...
