Money to spend
So at the beginning of the summer I started riding a lot more. That was when I realized my old Litespeed Chorus 9 speed was pretty worn out. While debating several options (repair/rebuild/upgrade) I stumbled on a Giant TCR Advanced SL at a great price.
Happy with my new purchase I decided to part out the Litespeed. To my surprise the parts sold quickly and for far more than expected. I also have a nice gravel bike I built ten years ago and I sold my last mountain bike as I don't do that anymore. I have vintage steel covered as well.
With the unexpected bike cash burning a hole in my pocket I've been trying to find something else interesting to buy. Looking for suggestions. Budget < $1000. Used most likely.
So far I've thought of:
1.Fat bike
2.Folding bike
3.Mini Velo style
4.Electric
I don't live in the city but something to carry in the car seems interesting. Fat bike are popular here, winter is coming. Electric doesn't really excite me (even thought I'm an EE by trade) and $1k doesn't buy much.
What am I missing?

Hybrid is a good recommendation. Do you do any city riding.?? It's fun and a Hybrid fits the task. Going over curbs, running down stairs, visiting monuments and parks, getting in line with traffic.... Ya, a city runner. A hybrid.

Of those options, I'd definitely go fat bike!
Otherwise, I have good fun with my single speed/fixed gear - a great workout if you hit some (easier) hills or rollers. They also break down pretty easily for transporting in a car.

Another thought for city riding is something that you know is a finely tuned machine, but in poor cosmetic shape so it's less of a theft target. An old road bike, maybe converted to single speed.

I've really wanted a fatbike but I wouldn't use it enough to justify. Here my 29er works well, but out there I bet a fat bike is a blast!
You should take that grand and add another $1500 then buy a carbon fiber fat bike. That would be incredible.

You probably wouldn’t get a great folder for under $1000 unless you got a great deal on CL. A lower tier Dahon maybe. You could probably find a good quality used fatbike for about $1000 or less. A lot of people around here (SF Bay Area) bought fatbikes and then tired of them quickly so they go cheap on CL. I think they are more fun in snowier climates. I’ve seen Surly Pugsly’s and Salsa Mukluks going for that price range occassionally.

Owner was an ex-racer so I think he had a parts connection. Chris King, Juicy brakes, XO-1 derailleur, new pedals and saddle, tires set up for tubeless, and just about everything that came on the bike replaced.
Frame had framesaver on it so it was perfect. Had sat on CL for two weeks with no interest. $750.
Looks like fun.

Funny you should mention that. Picked up a Salsa Mukluk today. Ad had little info and these bike come in many levels of trim. It was a two hour drive, when I got there WOW!
