Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frostbite in April

Title just about says it all. I managed to give myself frostbite on a 30 mile ride in April.

I am an idiot.

Discuss.

I don't mind cold, I can man up and put on more clothes, but it has been raining for 2 weeks straight here in Michigan, and it's windy. All I want is one warm, sunny, wind-free day.

I haven't even ridden outside yet. It was -18 this morning. And the roads are covered in inches of ice.
With the wind blowing its more like -26. Way to cold for any "winter gear" that you southern guys wear.

There is an upside to this weather though.... the mosquitos are slower and easier to smack.

Amen my righteous brother - same here in Colorado Springs, a little less rain, more freezing fog. What a waste April is. I am boycotting April. April sucks. If I had a frame pump, I would insert it in April's spokes on the group ride.

On an evening ride [in December] I decided (after checking the weather and dressing appropriately) to take a ride. It turns out the weather prediction was 10+ degrees wrong and, when at the top of the major hill I realized it had dropped into the low 20s, I knew I was in trouble. I lost feeling in my legs and hands and limped home. The bath afterwards was like bathing in fire; needless to say: I will never trust weather.com for forecasting ever again.

I always overdress a bit. Much easier to unzip to cool off if needed, then to try and warm up. I sometimes bring lighter gloves so I can switch mid-ride if I want.

Did RR in mid March and water bottle froze to slush making it undrinkable about halfway through the race. This happened with room temp water/sports drink st the start... Finger tips and toes got a little chilly near the end. Despite all this I cannot wait to do the same RR in 2014. Riding in April or any time with cold temps doesn't make you an idiot. Not wearing proper gloves, layers, socks, shoe covers etc. makes you an idiot.
