Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The wife and I started what I like to refer to as the caloric austerity program two weeks ago to get rid of Covid weight.

I’ve been eating 2033 cals per day w/ 228g of protein, 150 carbs and 57 fat. It’s a gigantic pain to weigh and track everything but it seems to be paying off. I’m down 8 since 1/4. It’s not sustainable long term and I’ll need to up them (not a problem once dry January ends) but still feels good.

Someone left a new Yeti Rambler coffee mug on my desk. Looks to be the 20 oz size. It commemorates the dedication of our relocated NJ office. The move was in September. I have never been there to see my office.

Correct. So-called "Bike Paths," at least the ones I have seen, are dangerous and best avoided whenever possible.

This is why I like to track calorie burn and work at a daily deficit, rather than a fixed caloric goal - more incentive to go for a walk or short ride if it means that I can squeeze in a small treat and/or beer at the end of the day.

Not all MUPs are created equal. In my area, some are horrible for a serious cyclist. Others are a lesser evil when trying to get from A to B. COVID certainly hasn't helped matters in my area - not only are there more people on the path, but there are regularly people walking together while "distanced," and taking up the entire friggin' path.

BAM's Cap Trail MUP usually isn't too bad. Not a ton of people.

I avoid the cap trail on the weekends, but I really havnt had that many bad experiences on it. This was my first really terrible experience and it was early in the morning. Literally the first people I came up on.

The weekends it’s over crowded, and the other cyclist bother me more than the walkers. These group of riders show up and ride side by side, accelerate slow down, just really don’t have respect for anybody else on the trail, but act like they are “elite”.

Ha - I've never run in to that, but then again, I've really only ridden the Cap in Dec and Jan, when most of the VA cyclists are hiding indoors.

It’s crazy, and if you try to pass them, they either speed up so you can’t, or they just stare at you like you breaking some rule.

I only did this once, so maybe I just picked a bad day. But if you drive by the Jamestown Parking lot on the weekends it is filled with people on bikes getting ready to go on the trail.

I forgot too, The other day when I was coming down centerville I had a cyclist riding against traffic come at me, I went into the road to pass him. He looked at me like I was the idiot.

I need to go back to work.

I've seen a lot of casuals there, but rarely a serious cyclist. I have seen some serious (lookin') cyclists unloading their cars at the park down by the river, though.

Once I drop 20, I’ll move to that. My 2033 assumes a 300 deficit daily and any riding or lifting on top of that is gravy. I did go over a few days when the burn was high.

I did bonk this morning when doing some intervals, I’m guessing as a result of not eating before I rode.

Every ride for me in the morning is on an empty stomach. I would have to wake up even earlier in order to eat before I road. On long rides i’ll bring something in case i get hungry.

My only opportunity to ride in the morning is on weekends. Every time I plan on skipping breakfast and doing a few hours of Z2 fat burning, but since it's the weekend I'm lazy and just hang out drinking coffee until 10 or 11. By then I'm usually pretty hungry and the plan falls apart

I was on the cap trail, (mup) and these three mouth breathers were walking towards me side by side. They saw me coming but made no attempt to make room for me. I went around them on the edge of the mup and of course this one spot had mud. Went down hard. *******s were polite enough to tell me I must have hit ice, and they kept walking.

Anywho looks like I am wrapping bars today, First time for everything so if anybody has any tricks or trade secrets let me know.

Manager at my LBS swears by ESI tape, I don’t know if anyone carries that in my area. I really like the tape on my wife’s bike but I can’t figure out what it is, and it’s not the tape listed on the trek website. The gripytac looks cool, but the texture feels rough?

Hope y’all have a great Monday.
  • Start at the bottom, leaving 1/3-1/2 the width outside the end.
  • Wrap from inside to outside, keeping a good bit of tension on the tape.
  • Remember you can unwrap the last couple loops and re-do them if they're uneven.
  • Do a figure of 8 around the levers so the top is wrapped back to front.
  • Cut the ends tapering to a point.
  • Wrap with electrical tape before putting on the trim tape that comes in the box.
  • Throw out the extra bits of tape they put in for people who can't do Figure Of 8 properly.
  • If there are logos on the end plugs, make sure to line them up carefully
  • If you need to, use a rubber mallet to hammer in the end plugs.
  • If you don't need the hammer, wrap the end plugs with electrical tape till you do.

Comments? Time to start a thread on Headset maintenance??
I've done nothing to my 16+ year old headset on the grey ghost. No problems noted. I got 40,000 miles on my big chain ring and changed my chain every 10,000 or maybe 15,000 miles. This is a 9 speed so maybe not as important as with 11 speeds. Changing my chain every 3500 miles on the new 11 speed bike? I hope ******* not.

Im not buying the propaganda from Big Chain.

There is some variability on lifespan of parts based on conditions and specifics.

That said, I do predict you will have to change your 11s chain every 3K miles or so.
