Who's a weekend warrior here...
Winters around the corner and daylight saving is on us next week and it seems that my weekday evening rides will be ending and that leaves only time to ride on weekends. Bummer... I don't like to ride in the dark even with lights and being cold is not fun.
I was wondering if only riding on weekends is not the best since our bodies will be at rest during the week but asked to go all out for one or two days? Being younger wouldn't be a problem but at our age is it a good thing? Just wondering...
I just did a 40 mile ride Saturday after a week of not doing anything and felt okay on Sunday. But I'm still in pretty good condition due to just coming off of summer. Not sure how I will feel in February just being a weekend warrior...

Even though last winter was kind of mild it seemed we got rain quit a lot on the weekends. I don't ride on wet roads or at night, so I missed a lot of days last winter. But during the two or three winters before that, I did not miss many Saturdays or Sundays. And because I like to wait until it warms up during the winter, that allows for only about a 4 hour window of opportunity, i.e. 11am - 3 pm. If the temp is over 45 degrees and the roads are dry, I'm riding. I know there were times I was bundled up like Raphie's little brother in "A Christmas Story", because of the wind chill factor.

I think my knees prefer if I ride every few days, but I do slow down a bit during the winter.
I should still get in a few good miles before the end of the year.
Virtually all of my riding is commuting, but the commuting can be somewhat erratic. I do ride in the rain, but much prefer the sunshine.

Before I was a commuter, I regularly used a pair of rollers. (I think I would go crazy if I did nothing all week. (Or my wife would kill me.))

One thing I love about my encore career in academia is my current work schedule, which permits me to work from home on Tu, Th, and Su. I work out at the YMCA (mainly upper body and trunk strength exercises, plus Achilles' rehab) and do some cycling on those three mornings/week, and I walk about 3-5 miles/day as part of my commute to/from and on campus on the other four days. (My office is on the second floor, the lab is on the third, and some of the classrooms are on the fourth, so I get to do a fair amount of stair climbing, as well.)

I don't like taking more than 2 or 3 days off the bike if I can manage it. I commute year round and my training partner and I have committed to keeping up our pre-work training rides through the winter.
And with 13-year old boy-girl twins each playing soccer, I spend most of my weekends bopping from field to field. So much for the CX bike I built up this summer.....

Our club has evening rides on Tues. and Thur. plus I ride on Sat. and Sun. so with rest days on Mon.-Wed.-Fri. it works out well for me. I used to commute to work on what are now my rest days (only 20 mi. per day) but that proved to be a bit too much.
But . . . I live in SoCal so we don't have the winter issues that some of you have. Yes, it does get a bit colder and we can ride in the snow in the mountains but overall, weather-wise, not too bad.
Club rides are almost completely in the dark this time of year and I will ride in the rain; but that doesn't happen too often either.

What's winter daddy? One reason we put up with the hurricanes, mosquitoes and humidity is the mild weather during the latter months. Every once in a while, we get some cold air masses down this far, but it warms up fairly quickly. You guys and gals take care not to get frozen solid if you are a regular commuter or venture out for a spin.
One thing here that I miss each winter are the yearly reports from Billydonn about the group that had regular trainer sessions several nights of the week. Rest in peace brother Donn, it just ain't the same here without you.

I live in Wisconsin with its winters of sub-freezing, even sub-zero temperatures with ice and snow.
I have no car, don't ride a bus or take taxis. My bike is not a recreational piece of equipment for me but a tool and my means of transportation to get to where I need to go. It pulls my cargo trailer which hauls what I need to haul. I don't have the luxury of being a "weekend warrior".

Our longer rides are on the weekends, but during the week we're still active with things like going to the gym, spinning classes, indoor cycling in the basement, weightlifting, and lots and lots of walking.

This year I stopped riding during the week because I am just too tired after work. I have always tried to get out for at least an hour or two on Wednesdays after work but this has been a brutal summer and work has become more competitive ( I'm a car mechanic ).
This, along with being 63 and getting sick a couple times, has made Saturday rides more difficult. I think it is finally cooling off, (it was over 100 last week) and I hope to do some riding again during the week. Too bad the damned job has become so demanding.

Here in Oklahoma winter is pretty short, and it hasn't arrived yet. We had our first overnight freeze a few days ago, but highs are still in the 50's or warmer -- still good cycling weather. It's my job that gets in the way of cycling! Two days a week I work from home, but the work tends to be cyclical and lately I simply haven't been able to find the time to ride during the week. So, yes, I've become a weekend warrior. Depending on the weather though, I should be able to squeeze at least one morning ride in during the week from mid-December.

I made a deal with myself several years ago that I had to do something outdoors at least one day each weekend. Lot of snow and ice? Then it is hiking, running, or snowshoeing. Last winter I caught some breaks in the weather and did get in at least one outdoor ride per month. This year I'm considering buying some studded tires for my Trek hybrid so that I can get out more often.
During the week I'm at my fitness center. Great time to work on strength training as well as intervals on the treadmill.

I find it difficult to ride during the week in other months, though I do occasionally work in a mid-week ride. During winter? forget mid week, I leave and go home in the dark.
I'm off Sat-Mon so most of my riding is during those three days.

In the winter I become a weekend warrior - at best. I think I average about one ride per month during the white part of the year.
