Thinking of larger screen for bike computer...
Hi there.
I have been using a Garmin 510 for many years and like the Garmin ecosystem but it's time for an upgrade.
Have been debating about which Garmin product to upgrade to.
Has anyone who has used any of the smaller screened Garmin computers regretted moving up to something like the 1030?
Most of my cycling is highway cycling - and am a little concerned about battery life with the 1030 - though I am aware I can purchase an additional external battery
Thanks for any advice...

I am with you. I have a 520 that has been flawless for me but still works fine. My next computer will be the 1030 or whatever variation is out when I need a new one. Screen size will be my first factor. The edge is also a good choice but if your into "numbers" like power and all that then the edge isn't a good choice but the 1030 is.
If wahoo would come out with the bigger screen yet I would go that route. For me size does matter so I can read the darn thing.

If you’ve no need for a lot of the fitness/power metric stuff, maybe look at the Edge Explore. Size of the 1000, maybe a very slightly smaller screen than a 1030 but bigger than an 830. Does not do some of the more advanced stuff, won’t talk to Di2 as example, no altimeter. Same navigation features and same maps as the more expensive units. No sales on it currently though, where the 1030 is $150 off list @$449, Explore remains at $249. Battery on the Explore is 12 hrs., vs. 20 for the 1030. I’ve been getting about 6-7% per hour usage on my 1030, not running Nav., so it’s on par with the Garmin rating. All these units can run on external stick batteries as BTW, if you are doing a tour with charging limitations.
I am also planning a power meter purchase this spring... so maybe the 1030 is the better choice for me...
As a bonus - the 1030 is on sale - which is what is motivating me a bit right now as well

I usually wait to purchase the latest and greatest - but with the 1030 on sale right now and the fact that they recently put out the Bontrager 1030 - I'm thinking it could be a while before the next leap in this technology is going to come along - and with the sale price hovering over my head - it's kinda making me think this may be the time...

I didn't know it was on sale....that is a great deal. That is super tempting. If my 520 wasn't such a solid computer I wouldn't even think twice. hmmmm

Price on the Hammerhead Karoo came down to $249 from $399.
The website has been saying for a month now that the price is going up to $499.

I've had an 800 for a while, and when it started acting a bit flaky I figured it was old enough to replace with a 1030. Naturally, the 800 took offense at that and has worked flawlessly ever since.
Two negative comments on the 1030. First, it's big enough that the quarter turn when mounting runs into other stuff on the bar/stem of a couple bikes. (Yes, I'm channeling Captain Dashboard. 2008-04-17 - Kickstand Comics featuring Yehuda Moon ) Second, it's possible to open so many fields on the 1030 that you lose the advantage of that lovely big screen. Easy to say, hard to actually go on a data diet.
All that said, I've been defaulting to the 1030 over the 800 for most of my rides. It's really a very nice unit.
