Schwinn Voyageur SP - front rack

Hi all,

Just had the good fortune of picking up a 1982 Schwinn Voyageur SP the other day, but I am missing the original front rack (I have the rear one). I'd like to be able to find it somewhere, although I suspect it is fairly rare.

Anyone have one they'd be willing to part with? If so, what would you want for it? This was one year before canti brakes and it does not have mounts half-way up the forks like later models of the SP.

If the original provides too hard to find, anyone know of a good front rack with those mounting options (center bolt on brake, and braze-ons down near the skewer) that would somewhat match the style of the back one? Back is silver aluminum tubing.

Thanks! PS-excited to join the forum as well!

Congratulations on the VSP score! If you don't want to go the whole eBay route- it looks like SOMA makes a few "vintage" style front racks.

Lucas Mini Front Rack | SOMA Fabrications

I haven't used one - but I've considered getting one.

Thanks! I'll post some pics later today as I'll have a little time to do some wrenching.

I tried ebay but didn't find much. I'll take a peek at the somas but I'd love to find something original if possible.

Man I had not seen that Soma rack before. Looks very much like what came on the 80's Schwinns.

IIRC- the VSP for that year had the proprietary rack system- you could use other racks- but the ones it came with were unique to the bike. You'll need some incredibly good luck to find them.

I have an 82 VSP with the front rack. It does seem unique in that the top screws onto the sides instead of being welded. I use my front rack a bit so I will probably keep it but I could test fit some other front racks I have lying around to see how they fit if you are interested in that.

Thanks! Yeah if you have other racks lying around that look similar to the style of the original, I might be interested in that if you aren't willing to part with the original.
