Stretched Seatlug

Friend of mine came to me with a Trek 750 frame asking if I can fix it. The seat lug has to be tightened down to the point where the slot is closed. Seems someone in the past consistently over-tightened it with a quick release over the years and now the lug ears are stretched.

The only thing I can think of is widening the slot to allow the ears to pinch the post with more authority. Is there another way to fix this?

That's usually a result of using a too-small seat post. Steel is pretty forgiving, though, and you can often spread it back to normal with a conical plug or careful leverage with a post you can fit into the opening.

You say this is a Trek 750. Unfortunately, Trek has re-used model designations over the years on greatly different frames (were they afraid they would run out of numbers or something?). The original model 750 from the 1980s was a full-on hand-built road racing frame, lugged construction with Reynolds 531 tubing. In the 1990s, the model 750 was a fairly generic hybrid bike. This makes it difficult to predict what size seat post the frame should take.

I'd just file the slot wider.

It is a 90's era Multitrack 750. I have the correct seatpost, and it will tighten down, but to get to that point the slot is completely closed. One would think that the post was too small, however it is not. Perhaps a previous owner ran a post that was too small? I will play with it and see what works!
