Intelligentsia Cup 2018

Intelligentsia Cup powered by SRAM ? Chicago Bike Racing

I'll be there for the 10 days of action, sounds like Mikey will too!

Anyone else from the 33 getting in on the action?

Any tips for a first-timer?

I’ll be there, but I’m also a first timer and a lowly Cat 4. I’m only doing the Dennis Jurs and Joliet races, not the full omnium due to family obligations.

Only thing I can say is that you should really pay attention to traffic. I used to live up there, and my wife is from the Naperville area. Traffic can be a bear, and if you leave at the wrong time, it can end poorly and the races are all over the area.

Treat it just like a race in California, just don't say 'dude' as much.

I'll be doing the whole series.
Lake Bluff scares me because of the tight corners. I went away from that one with a lot of road rash in 2016, the last time I did it. Then again I'm a cat.4, it shouldn't be a problem for upper category racers.
The July 24th, South Chicago Kermesse RR is a cool course, but that is a bad part of town. Bring enough coffee with you to last the day! lol And don't make eye contact with the beggars at the stop lights!
Race videos always make good course previews!

I'll be going out for the third year in a row. i'm pumped, it's an awesome series and there's something special about only focusing on bike racing for 10 days straight.

Another tip in addition to the traffic comment is to be prepared with ice socks. It's friggin hot out there. Also, bring your punchy climbing legs for west dundee. that course is BRUTAL.

It'll be interesting this year with three long road race days, we're going to be dead by the end.

I'm sorry, I don't mean anything bad. I'm a farm kid, and the whole experience was a little much for me. I asked a teammate for a ride because I didn't want to drive down there, and he ended up riding with me. Then he wanted a coffee when we left, and we circled a Starbucks for what seemed like forever trying to find a parking spot. (It was about a half hour.) Then it was bump-n-go traffic for 2 hours on I-90 in my car with a manual transmission. (Not fun!) I was pretty wound up by the time we got out of the city! Good times....

I want to do this one some year. I did 3 of the races a few years ago when it was the Prairie State Cycling Series.

Been wanting to do the whole series for a while..

Hopefully everyone is doing well out there! Its also the big day @cyclinganomaly has to confront the beggars. Making eye contact is a big step, not something you do lightly. I recommend only trying when the doors are locked and windows rolled up.

I made it in and out of there just fine! Yay!
I had a close call in the race with bumping handlebars though. I handled it just fine, the guy that bumped into me handled it just fine, but someone behind us started freaking out. So that was a little funny. (about the 44 minute mark) Gotta love the cat.4's, they started the sprint right where the road straightened out. I ended up 8th! No upgrade points again.

I had a good time.

Sunday in Elgin was rainy, and a road race on a 3.5mile crit course in my opinion. Started too far back, got stuck behind a bunch of guys dragging their brakes through every turn, after I got through that, I missed the field riding away and got stuck in no mans land. Just jammed away, caught a few guys, a few guys came back up to me and our little group of ten or so had our own little race. Bottom 50% finish.

Monday at the Autobahn Country Club. Crash City. i don’t know how you have 3-4 crashes on a wide open auto racing course, but hey we did. Windy, day, stayed towards the back, moved up when I was planning too, then got stuck behind a big crash on the final lap, powered my way through the mess, trying to drag myself back to the line, finished 23/24 or something, but had the legs and the plan to do much better. One dude had his cervelo’s rear triangle smashed to pieces.

Lesson learned over two days, stay at the front. Stay at the front.

Going back to GA to race state champ crit and a couple other things that go through August, then its back to base and whatever is fun.

My results were pretty bad. Crashed a few times and my cornering confidence was shook. made the break the last day though, last out of the group for 6th. off the bike it was a blast though. got to meet mattm while warming up at south chicago which was nice. really hoping to return next year.

Ha pretty similar for me! Lots of ups and downs, but overall a great experience. Team-wise we did well; got a podium, and won some premes.

Nice to meet you man - see you next year out there if not sooner.

Where in Atlanta? My family still lives down there, so I have to visit with some frequency. Maybe we can meet up some time.

I'm excited for non bike life atlanta, but how's the riding down there? doesn't seem like it's great, at least in terms of the roads you can get to for day to day training.

Dike Lane Velodrome has a pretty strong community, if you want to take up track racing.

City proper will probably be difficult. I live north of the city in Alpharetta, so I can get to more rural roads pretty quickly. Going up north into the mountains gets you into real climbing, the most popular being "The Gaps", there are 6 or so of those. My rides usually end up having to occur during rush hour, so I either hit the roads with the least traffic, or the trainer as necessary. Once you get a little bit out of the city, it gets better in terms of traffic and the ability to train.

Lots of group rides. Winter is The Airport Ride, race type ride, about 60mi, starts in city heads to, well, the airport. Tucker Ride is another fast one, usually the local heavy hitters. Up north where I am is the Webb Bridge, A ride isn't as aggressive as the others, but is Cat3+ type speed/effort.
