Shimano 105 5800, upgrade to what?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

excellent points but I might have spent more on biking clothes this year than she has on clothes for herself. She is a frugal one regarding clothes. We just make decisions regarding money together. She is starting new job and picked up some clothes but she ran the decision by me for us to agree on it.

i do wish that I could figure out what to look for in carbon wheels.. i also have read that stopping on carbon rims is sketchy. So i am not totally sure I would want to move in that direction.

CF rims might not stop as well ... particulalry when wet ... but a lot of people use them.

The only benefit i can see is weight .... and there are a lot of really light metal wheels out there. CF might be marginally stiffer for the weight ... and if you want aero rims, CF will certainly be lighter.

Really? You sure your bike was tuned properly? My ultegra 6500 9 speed shifters I find shift just as good as the newest ultegra r8000 shifters. Maybe your drivetrain was worn out.

i say don’t upgrade op. I can afford to upgrade but why? We are talking grams here. Power meter is a better investment and a nice garmin unit to go with it.

Both are very precise, but the 5800 is lower friction.

You can't make this stuff up! I'm still laughing.

Thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to start a thread on whether I got a good deal on my Madone 8 years ago.

I also have a newer CAAD 12 w/105. And, I upgraded with Mavic USTs. But, I'm turning 75 in June and thought I should celebrate with an upgrade. I looked into Ultegra and Dura Ace and kept running into the same question: Why? All my research suggests there is little, if any, functional difference and the weight I might save can more easily be saved by having the cyclist lose a couple lbs. Then there's the money. I think I'm going to focus on being a better cyclist and spend my money doing a Farm to Fork Fondo.

How about carbon fiber seat post and handlebars? (But not stem, that would be a weight weenie extremist move.)

I upgraded to a smaller Ultegra 12-25 cassette from the 105 5800 11-32 cassette that came with my bike. I did it mainly to get closer gear ratios, not for the weight savings.

What is a farm to fork fondo? It sounds like something that would involve a great meal, so my interest is piqued. Please share details.

Here's some info. https://www.farmtoforkfitness.com/schedule

Basically a weekend of rides that end with a locally grown meal. A friend of mine leads some of the rides and is involved with the planning of the events. He also has a radio show on WHUS called Bicycle Talk. He goes by Pedlin' Ron (aka: Ron Manizza). As you can see, they are primarily in the northeast but there are others across the country I believe.

Di2 or nothing, some sweet clothes, a nice computer, a power meter or something else that actually add value and functionality.
