New Steerer Tube?

Wondering if a new and longer steerer tube can be fitted to an existing fork?
Thanks!

Yes but the fork may not be worth the cost. It should be done by an experienced frame builder.

video how to.

Our tandem needed to have its steerer tube replaced after the original one snapped at the base. Also needed to have the head tube reshaped after it smashed into the pavement. Both repairs were handled very inexpensively by a frame builder in town.

Thanks for the replies!
The fork is on our Co-Motion tandem and would like to bring the bars up but really don't want to use a steerer tube extension.

By the time you get a builder to do the work and add new paint for the fork, it’s going to be pretty expensive. A custom stem can put the bars right where you want them. Might be less expensive.

I wss wondering if a steerer tube can be lengthed by splicing? So the painted portion would not be touched.

Mikkelsen Frames Bernie in Oakland California area may be one to weld on a splice...

I went with a BBB BHP 21 on a too short cut fork on a used bike buy

that one is internal you remove the star nut,
I thought the clever bit was the custom made bolt.
its a hex to tighten the wedge , and threaded inside to use the same threadless top cap headset adjustment as you had with the star-fangled nut..

Also
You might contact Co Motion, in Eugene and just order another fork
with an un cut steerer, as well..

....

The idea in the video makes sense to me as it would save the painted portion of the fork.
Thanks for the ideas!

I recently sourced a replacement fork from Co Motion (for a customer's CM tandem). They were fairly insistent on the steerer's max length, concerned about too much steerer above the upper headset stack and the leverage that this can produce. They took down the tandem's serial # and tracked back thrrough their records to find the OEM fork's dimensions. It's my view they will he hesitant to provide a fork with a greater then stock steerer length. The real answer might be different...

But there're a few ways to change the bar height without going to the most expensive option. Andy

I would definitely go with a riser stem
