Nutted Dual Pivot Brakes

Not an ISO thread...

I'm looking for info on any nutted dual pivot brakes to replace MAFAC Racers on a friend's C&V bike. Need up to 57mm reach.

I know that I can drill out the fork crown and rear brake bridge to take recessed nut brakes but I don't want to go that way.

Tektro made a model R538 but those brakes got a bad rap for the QRs coming loose.

Any other suggestions?

I don't know how practical this idea is, but perhaps you could disable/bypass the quick release on the R538s and use old-timey QR brake levers. I have a set of R538s in a bin. I will take a look tomorrow and see if there is an simple way to bypass the QR.

The Tektro R539 is nutted with a 47-57 reach. The R539 also improved the quick release.

Oooops, never mind ... I see you do not have / want recessed.

Have you considered something like these to convert recessed brakes to nutted?

I ordered a few but have yet to try them and don't know how well, or if they work.

just to be clear, you do not need to drill out the rear brake bridge, and the amount that comes out from "drilling" the back of hole of the fork is shavings... not much material removed at all

that is more good info, as you don't want to go this way

I have several pair of the Tektro R559, which are a long-reach caliper. All are nutted. The long-reach are really nice either for 650B conversions, or for old frames built for 27" but converted to 700c.

Technically not C&V, but they have the stopping power that my 200+ lbs. fueled inertia requires!

ymmv, of course.

Tektro brakes can be converted to the nutted version using the conversion kit:

I have several 27" wheel Schwinn bikes with these as well, they seem to be the easiest option for updating the Weinmann center pulls that came originally to dual pivot (though I think the Weinmanns could be made to work well) ... while I appreciate their existence a lot, you can really tell the difference between them and say comparable but shorter Shimano R451s. The Tektros have a bit more flex and don't seem to work quite as well. They do work just fine though, so I don't complain a lot.

These look nice but $$$ and not as reachy as the Tektros:

I wonder if deep down they are also Tektro?

Nutted 539's should do the trick. I have a pair on my ST Cannondale and they stop very, very well.

Some recent Tektro products have less than optimal pads, but my 539's are good, have been for years.

Concur. I always upgrade Tektros and most lower end Shimano brakes to Kool Stop pads.

Agreed, both Doc and I had nutted R539's on our Palouse ride this past weekend and they worked great for both.

Tektro and Cane Creek Brakes

Thanks for the suggestions folks.

@CycleryNorth81 suggested the Tektro nutted conversion kit which looks like a good idea for $19.00. I'm gifting this bike to someone and it's their first experience on a C&V steel bike so I'm trying to provide them with good braking while staying within my budget (read cheap).

I may take @squirtdad advice and drill out the fork and use the recessed calipers.

I have 2 NOS sets of recessed mount dual pivot brakes: IRD badged Tektro RC459 (B57) and Cane Creek SCR-3L which appear to be Tektro made too.

Aside from the pads which I'm going to change, does anyone have any experience with these brakes? Good, Bad??? Thanks.

Apart from the Tektro conversion kit, which contains much more than you need, you can get just the long pivot bolt for the front on eBay for around $6, use that to replace the original rear pivot bolt, and use the original front brake on the rear.

I got nut fixed Campag Single pivots , they work fine..
you just squeeze a bit more firmly..

Dual pivot on my Brompton, they're probably Tektro supplied,

2nd Brompton , first had CLB single pivots..

both have the cable coming up from the bottom.
