Usually I see "series" used in this case to describe something in the 8xx or 8xxx range. For example, I've been people call a Trek 710 a "7 series". Sometimes people will refer to a BMW 535 as "5 series". There's a certain level of ignorance involved with doing it in certain cases, but if you don't know better, you don't know better.

I suspect that's what's going on in your case. However, this can both be tricky and dangerous. For example, there's a considerable difference in 1984 between a 720 (touring) and a 770 (racing), for example. And even more so, a significant difference between a 1993 Trek 720 (single track) versus a 1983 Trek 720 (touring). You could call all four of those bikes "7 series" and you'd potentially be eating crow.

You really need to ask the person to send a pic, give you the serial#, and you can look decode what you're dealing with. If you can get that info, post those here, and feel free to replace the last 3 digits of the serial with X's so the info is less-personalized.

Hey francophile thanks for the reply. Bike is on facebook marketplace. My mom is going to pick up a rack from this woman for me so I thought I would look into the bike also just in case. She sent a pic and it says 8 series on the top tube. I would include photo but don't know how. Bike is mountain with fork suspension which I hate

In the 90s Trek made 800, 820, 830 and 850 in various years. THese were entry level mountain bikes with Taiwanese made welded steel frames.

They also made a bike called the 8000 which was a higher end aluminum frame mountain bike, made of bonded aluminum in Wisconsin until te mid-90s when they went to Taiwanese welded aluminum (IIRC)

There were also 8700 and 8900 and a couple others which I forget that were originally aluminum lugs bonded to Carbon fibre tubes in the early 90s, and changed to OCLV full carbon frames in the mid 90s, and were welded aluminum by the mid 00s.

TL;DR If it is an 800 series it is a 'less expensive' bike, if it is 8000 then it is a higher end bike.

Thks for the replies guys, ....2cam it is a hardtail mtb with front suspension. I don't know how to download a photo from facebook marketplace to my phone. After posting this thread I saw another trek that had 4 series painted across the top tube. Not able to find anything on search

This pic I found on the internet googling "Trek 8 series" seems to match your description. The specific model is an 820, but there's a more prominent 8 Series decal on the top tube. Looking through the Trek Archives, it matches a 2010 model. https://archive.trekbikes.com/us/en/...ek/820/details

It's low-end and not worth $250, so don't sweat not picking it up.
