Everyone who enjoys a nice pumpkin pie will be glad to know that this year's pumpkins are in progress and seem fine. I forget the specifics, but the majority of the nation's pumpkin pie filling comes from the Peoria area (and I have no idea why).
so, in summary, things are looking fine and there are no obstacles to the ride so far!

Libby's is a major canner of Pumpkin Pie filling and processes most of the Pumpkins in this area.
Hence Morton Punkin Chuckin’ keeps soaring!
Nothing beats a Punkin Chuckin contest.

I'll admit that my photo was from the Chillicothe area, which is in the sandy flood plain of the Illinois river, but there are plenty of pumpkin fields amid the corn fields around Dunlap and Princeville (just the areas where I frequently ride and see pumpkin fields).
Libby does tell the world that their pumpkins come from central Illinois, as evidenced by one of their cans...

I've always heard that sandy soil is great for growing melons, pumpkins, etc.
I do not know why; it's just one of those things I was told as a kid and always repeated.
This was before the internet, when grownups knew stuff.

Perhaps I can eat a donut in your absence??
See you at Hilly.. they have donuts at the rest stop there, so you can make up for the ones you missed at Tanners.

Hey guys, I don't mean to hijack this thread... but I was just wondering if someone familiar with Peoria could private message me about some of the different neighborhoods there? Thanks so much!

As a responsible ride leader, I took some time today to ride out to Tanner's Orchard and check on the road conditions and the quality of the donuts.
Summary of results: the roads haven't changed, and the donuts are still wonderful!
some details......
the pumpkins are getting bigger. Not sure how the whole crop is doing, but there will be at least a few pumpkin pies for the holidays.
the apple trees are bearing fruit and a variety of types are available. I picked up a half peck of the Honeycrisp variety, which went in the pannier for the trip home.
Tanner's Orchard has finished the changes in layout in the store, opening up a fair bit of space and improving the traffic flow on busy days. I won't deny feeling a bit nostalgic for the old layout, but it really did make it hard to move around at times. They did keep the facades of the fudge shop and bakery, which I appreciate.
and as hinted at, I had a responsibility to check out the donuts (it's a tough job!)
It was a slow day, so the clerk was nice enough to go to the fryer and get me a couple of donuts that were still hot!! Sooo good!
the weather for today's toodle up to Tanner's was just about perfect... about 68F and partly cloudy. A bit of a north wind, but nice. I'm starting to wonder if I should move the ride two or three weeks earlier....
thoughts?

I was really hoping to attend this year but unfortunately a family member recently died and the memorial service is on this date. Maybe next year?

The orchard isn't going anywhere, and I don't have a reason to not ride the bike there and eat donuts, so next year is certainly an option. See you then.

well, it really picks up as it gets close to Halloween. Early September is definitely a slow time for them, especially if you go there on a weekday morning.
Now that I'm retired and have the luxury of picking when I want to ride, I'm getting a bit spoiled and try to avoid Tanners during the crowded periods.

16mph is the target, but I think Dale (@speedevil) was a fair bit below that value last year. Robbie was hanging back with him some of the time, and it seemed to work out. I believe Dale is planning to attend, so maybe a slower group can form. We'll still want to regroup and such, just to make sure no one is lost or has some mechanical issue.
As for work.... I highly recommend retirement.
If that's not an option, then you gotta do what you gotta do. Hope things work out and you can attend!

Bump for a fun ride! The Bloomington group of Brian, Bob, and Julian discussed convoy plans this weekend, and I am still working on getting our friend Ted to join us. He has a green Fuji with gold rims that he rides more often than not.
Julian saved my bacon on Saturday, as the bike I intend to ride, a 1982 Bianchi, had a loose crank arm. I took it down to the coop, and Julian got it back on tight, after inspecting it. I've ridden it 40 miles or so since, and will ride it all this week just to make sure it's good to go.
Looking forward to seeing everyone, and their cool bikes!

^^^^^ Brian, that Bianchi is very nice. Looking forward to seeing it and you. I'm bringing a 1989 Cannondale ST600 this year. Weather forecast is looking good for Saturday. Donuts await!
