Okay, here's an opportunity for you: a bikeforums.net Whittier Hills ride. This Saturday Jan. 19th, meet at the TGI Fridays parking lot on Birch, in Brea, across from Brea Mall.
Meet at 8:00 AM for an 8:30 start . . . or when everyone gets ready to go.
There will be three course options (with a route sheet!) and I will be riding the option with three brutally difficult climbs, the worst of which will be Descnding (which we will be ascending).
Lou Ann Montalvo will also be there as a leader, since she knows these routes/roads like the proverbial back of her hand.
Do you think I should start a thread about this ride, or is posting it here going to be enough?

KOM? Naaah, too masochistic for me. Given my age, some scientific research and my own experience, I don't think I'll do any of these rides. Seriously, if you have 20 minutes, watch this video, it might save your life.

4 weeks to go... We did a chunk of the MC route recently and are hoping to go back and do another section on Sunday that will include Decker. However, with a brand new baby in the house I am seriously sleep deprived, have a very unpredictable schedule and my primary riding is intervals on the trainer now and then. Yikes.

I finished all three last year and got my polka dot gear, too. I signed up this year for Mulholland, but a knee problem is keeping me out, drat! The same knee issue slows me down in the best of times, and when I have finished Mulholland, I've done it in the nick of time.
So instead of riding Mulholland this year I will be doing roving SAG. If you break down, watch for a white Kia Sorento coming to your rescue.
And when doing a ride like Mulholland, keep your nutrition up during the ride. Last year I bonked about a mile from the finish. I searched my pockets and found 5 energy gels and 2 crackers. Inhaled it all, and did the last mile.

Great! We'll keep an eye out for you. Look for a black Felt with a slow rider, ha ha. We are doing a pre-ride out there tomorrow morning - in case anyone else is planning on going the weekend too. Did Decker as part of the ride last weekend - yowzaa, that climb was a beast.

Go get them!! Should be perfect weather.
By the way is anyone intrested on doing a variation of the ride same day? I am not sure if I want to register yet having done the last two years. I was thinking about skipping Jack Rabbit Trail but instead climb Wildwood Canyon through Yucaipa back down Oak Glen to the gas station and then follow the route the rest of the way.

Just found this thread, I'm signed up for Mulholland and B.A.. I have no idea what to expect with Mulholland, I'm going in blind - I haven't ridden any of it before. I've done all the climbs of Breathless except Jack Rabbit Trail, so I have a good idea what to expect there.
Shooting for 9 hour completion time, so I'll be leaving at 6:45. Hope to meet some good people and to enjoy (as much as is possible) the ride.
I'll be in the generic black Capo kit on the side of the road looking confused while trying to figure out the route sheet.

did a pre ride the malibu 7
Long up hills steep in parts then long downhills
I think I will be challenged to find the right gears
Decker is steep at he bottom by PCH
I think you can sell out a little on the climbs because you get a long downhill reprieve
I am think 10 would not surprise me but am shooting for the low 9s
The routes are more complicated than the roads
They will not mark it as Malibu does not like that at least during the 7 they did not
I am on a white Wilier and will wear my Pinarello jersey with a goat on it
say hi when you pass

I've done most of the course for MC (but not in one day...), as indicated above, lots of ups and downs -some really steep parts. I haven't been on the section north of Mulholland where the road is not well maintained. Probably a lot like Jack Rabbit, but with some major hills. I just hope to finish so it you see a black Felt going extra slow (black and white kit) I apologize in advance for blocking the road

Lol, I would include 9:59:59 as 9 hours, so I doubt I'll be passing anyone! Anyhow I'll be on a raw CAAD10.
Just really slow and easy rides for the rest of the week.

RAW CAD 10 sweet I have a RAW CAD 9. Jack Rabbit Trail is so much bettter then any of the bad roads on MC in my opinion, paticularly because you are going slower and it is mixed in with dirt making it softer.

most of the roads I was on a couple of weeks ago were good. We went up Latigo instead of Topanga and were not on Mulholland except for some brief descending.
Yerba Buena was the one horrible road that we descended. I think climbing it will be better.
Deer creek climb was not easy I do not remember completely as I was suffering but I think that road was good as well so I think it a better choice to go downhill
Decker was a hard and long right out of the gate. Mid way through the climb I feel I was in too low of a gear by the sheer audacity of the start. I will pay more attention to gearing as I climb the second time around. Being at mile 70 and with one more major climb to go this looks to be an important climb and a good gauge as to overall time in my view.
Everything from Topanga south will be new to me. The Malibu 7 went more north

Well, that didn't work out the way I expected.
Big time burnout from double century on 3/23 + some kind of virus last weekend (only got well enough to ride on Wednesday), only 90 or so miles between 3/23 and today, a flat less than an hour into the ride, then overshooting the first sticker stop and having to backtrack. Final time 11:30. I guess it beats last year's 11:52 on a shorter course, but still.

Saw everyone on the MC yesterday as I was doing my usual Rock Store climb. I was going to drop down to the beach on Encinal but with all that fog, bailed and headed back down Westlake. Hope it wasn't too wet on the rest of the course.

The route sheet, which I kept in my jacket pocket, had no dry spots left by Rock Store and started disintegrating by Stunt. My sunglasses kept getting fogged up and I had to wipe them with the shorts because there were no dry spots on the jersey or the jacket. On Cotharin/Deer Creek we had something like 200 to 500 foot visibility fog all the way to the PCH (made Deer Creek descent, ahem, "interesting".) I only got somewhat back to normal at the checkpoint on Decker where they had rolls of paper towels.

Great weather for climbing. Lousy weather for descending. Crappy rest stops (not a PBJ at any of them) and at least one sticker stop you could easily miss. Really cool group of riders - and a tasty burger at the end. And best of all I wasn't DFL, I think I was second to DFL. ha ha
