Getting lazy
Since getting my bike on May 15th 2010, I have commuted about 1300 miles. My highest weekly mileage total was 171 miles. Since then my mileage has dropped. A few weeks have even been under 100 miles.
I get tired later in the week which is probably normal, but I'm trying to work my way up to 5 days a week.
Do I need a different motivation to get there or do I just need to suck it up and work harder on the 5 days a week?
Thanks in advance.

I'm ahead of last years pace with over 1500 commuting miles so far this year. I'm glad I don't have to ride every day, I'd be too worn out.

So are you putting extra miles on sometimes or do you hit 170 when you go 5 days? I would concentrate on going five days more than extra miles when you do ride. After a few weeks you won't even think about driving to work. Then do the extra miles.

But when you aren't commuting by bike, make sure to remind yourself what a nice day for a ride it is...

What is your reasoning behind increasing your mileage?

Getting burnt out now and then is normal IMHO. In particular in extreme temperatures (too cold and too hot). I take a break from biking for a few days now and then. I often have bikeless weekends where I'd drive somewhere out of town and hike for a day, or just stay home and relax. Have you tried varying your route? It's the routine and monotony that adds to the feeling of being burnt out. Change the route often, include some errands in your commute to break the routine, stop by a park, stop for ice cream, etc.

Hey, I only commute around 60 miles a month so I'm almost ashamed to comment in this forum, but I agree with AdamDZ, sometimes you got to take a break from something or it gets to where it's not fun anymore.

Taking a break is good as well. I took a break last week and went mt. biking all week. Now I'm just waiting for a wheel to be fixed. So, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Sounds like you have a long commute. If I cycle commute all 5 days, my total is just under 100 miles, and my legs feel pretty tired by Friday. If my commute was as long as yours, I'd probably be taking at least one day off mid-week.
If you're getting lazy, then I (and many others around here) am downright slothful.

If I ride 5 days a week, my weekly total is around 180 miles. Roughly 36 miles a day. I take the weekends off from the bike to take the family to the apt. pool.
I do remind myself everyday that I don't ride what a nice day it is. Or how nice it turned out and I wish I was on the bike.
It's in the shop now giving me a break for a few days. Nothing major just a basic tune up.
I'm glad it's not just me that is feeling this way. The heat is terrible.

The heat is terrible, and therefore it isn't a nice day. ![Smilie](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Anyways, your problem is that you're getting either too much or too little nookie. That seems to be everyone's problem, really.
