Odd sound coming from the pedals

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Odd sound coming from the pedals

So I have SPD shimano pedals (XTR).

When pedaling, there is no noise as long as my feet are completely straight (forward). But if I move a bit (the pedals do float a few degrees), I get a sound.

What could it be?

is it a squeek? Could just be the pedal rubbing against the bottom of the shoe or the cleat rubbing against the pedal. I generally clean and apply a dry lube to the pedals every thousand miles or so
