Want an inexpensive, unfancy bike for my wife in Palm Beach, FL

Does anyone in the area of Palm Beach county have an extra bike to sell? I have a Rudge 3-speed to ride I keep there for when we visit my mother in law, and we need one for my wife, too. Doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to work for gentle, short rides. She likes hybrids, and she also likes road bikes if the reach isn't too long. She can't ride a three-speed, as the reach is too short for her. We could pay $200 but we'd rather pay less, if possible. I'll be scouring craigslist, too. We'll be in Palm Beach County on February 11 for a few days.

My wife is 5'4" tall.

Thanks.

Tom

You might want to contact Jack the Bike Man -- he's local to West Palm Beach, and gives/sells used bikes.

In High Falls, she has a Trek 820 from around 1995. It's capable but heavy as a mountain. She also has a Trek FX 7.3 which is a great design. It's basically a slightly performance oriented hybrid. In NYC, she has @whatwolf's old bike, an All-City Machi Man, which I'm very envious of.

Tom,
if you need a facilitator, let me know. I can ask my friend in WPB to help you, the one garaging my Paramount down there. Also have friends in Wellington.

Are you bringing bike tools? I have a Prelude to overhaul in Wellington, that will be my Florida bike and our trips may overlap.

CL has quite a few Trek hybrids listed.

@oddjob2, I guess I could bring tools. I have to remember to put them in my checked bag. They get confiscated if I bring them in my carryon.

I found that out the hard way with a pedal wrench. At least they let me go back to the front of the airport and check my bag instead of confiscating it outright. Watchout for the crazy bike mechanic!!

Yup, it was a pedal wrench with me. I don't remember if I couldn't check my bag or what. A hunk of metal can't be longer than seven inches.

I accidentally had a large pair of scissors once. The lady just shrugged her shoulders, put it back in the bag, and sent me on my way.,,,,BD

I head down soon and was wondering if you were successful in your search? Also any bike resources to recommend, otherwise, I have a usps box full of tools to ship. Finally, any particular bike paths or ride of note?

Thanks Tom.

Thanks for asking. We visited Jack the Bike Man in West Palm Beach, and my wife bought a Gary Fisher Nirvana. It is duly unspecial. 24 gears are so much more than necessary on that terrain and on short rides, but that's OK.

I donated my Hercules 3-speed, as Jack's shop is a non-profit. The bike needed more work than I was willing and able to put into it.
