Europe to U.S. shipping damage on parts....

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Europe to U.S. shipping damage on parts....

Merlin simply wrapped the oem box in that grey plastic crap. Stupid!!

Obvious bend and tweak/twist at the guide pulley.
So in this particular case it's Merlin, but I had this happen before with some Mavic Wheels on a black-friday deal a couple years ago. (hubs punched thru cardboard box and eventually tossed plastic hub protectors and got some nicely ground up hub ends.)

Picked up an Ultegra rear derailleur this week and appeared to be ok upon initial inspection but they did ship it in its VERY thin oem box and just that hefty-trash-bag wrapping around that.

Well....went to put it on today & definitely not well. Took me a bit to figure out the bottom of the cage has a banana bend to it & causes the lower guide pulley to angle weird & just wants to toss the chain once it gets inside 'midline' of the chainline. (sigh)

Soooo....back goes the old derailleur (still fine, just wanted to at least do new jockey wheels & since the whole derailleur was little more than just the jockey wheels, I bought the whole RD)

Anyway.....waiting to hear back from Merlin. We'll see how this goes.

Don't know about Merlin but the return process with Chain Reaction is straight forward. Does take awhile.

Shipping back to England stinks.

I can't remember which vendor but one of the UK based companies had some awful third party contracted to facilitate returns. They kept the returns in a warehouse in Jamaica, Queens, New York adjacent to JFK airport until there was enough product to fill a pallet and ship cost effectively to England. My return sat in that warehouse five weeks while I waited for a refund.

I ordered once from Chain Reaction. It arrived 3 weeks later. When I called to ask about what was taking so long, the package was in the Netherlands and had been there not moving for a week. They told me there was a delay, but rest assured it was coming. It was a set of tires and some small parts. When it did finally arrive the box was torn open. Everything was there, but it was by luck. Just tipping the paper thin box the right way would cause the small parts to fall out. There was no packing material, at all. They may be a great store for UK customers, but I won't be ordered from there again.

Sorry my last couple days got crazy & I lost track of this thread. I think I'm just gonna keep the thing & try & tweak it straight. (straighter)

I don't think that they're perfectly straight lines as stock but in the case of this derailleur I just need to get the guide pulley straight & slightly close the gap in the cage sides to keep the chain on the pulley. Here are a couple pics......(And yes, it sucks that I have to pay for Merlin not knowing you need to put a lightweight packaging box in a REAL box before you ship it.)
