Bikes vs Cars
Bikes vs Cars is a new movie by Fredrik Gertten.
The ad from the theater where I work says "Bikes vs Cars depicts a global crisis that we all deep down know we need to talk about: Climate, earth's resources, cities where the entire surface is consumed by the car. ... In the film we meet activists and thinkers who are fighting for better cities, who refuse to stop riding despite the increasing number killed in traffic."
Check to see if it will be playing at a theater near you.

Hogwash! Don't they know that anyone who discusses such issues as "climate, earth's resources" and "cities where the entire surface is consumed by the car" are nothing but a pack of hypocrites? And those activists, why I reckon they're all a bunch of single college students and hippies who don't have any children and live in a flat town just a few blocks from their campus. When are they going to get off of their high horse, for Christ's sake?
How's that?

I'm going to reply in the typical LCF style so as to give certain other posters a rest.

It won't be playing near me. I clicked on the watch-online link and got page-not-found.

Putting levity aside for a moment, this is a film I've been wanting to see for quite some time now. I wish I could watch it on the internet.

It sounds interesting. I hope somebody will let us know if it's ever online or on TV or whatever. If there were a webpage, I would try to get the producer or publicist to join us here for a conversation.

It can be rented for 72 hours for €4.57 or bought for €8.99. I think I'll go for the former.

It looks like a fun movie. Maybe sometime this Spring I'll pay the small fee to watch. I already watch ten movies in the winter and five in the summer, which is more than enough films for me. (A faculty member at the local university puts on Scandinavian films for the community and my wife and I got hooked a few years back.)

I saw this movie last night, at a community eco event. Over a hundred people showed up for it.
90 minutes long, lots of facts and figures about the growing problems of having too many cars in many of our cities... Cities designed around the car, auto manufactures and drivers not covering the true costs of driving, etc. This is where the producers did a good job. But a little too much focus was put on the dangers of cycling, I feel. Ghost bikes, memorial services for cyclists, and detailing a few particularly gruesome incidents seemed to be used as a way to demonstrate the need for change. Since most people already consider cycling more dangerous than it actually is, I think this was a mistake.
I think they missed an opportunity to show that while we need to make some big changes, individuals don't have to wait for those changes to start biking… it’s plenty safe enough as is.

I also strongly agree that people don't need to wait for big governmental programs to get onto their bikes and ride. As a huge company headquartered just a bit north of me says, just do it. I'm sick of people claiming that they take things like climate change and local air pollution seriously and then refusing to ride a bike because there's no formal program for it. I see it as a big game of tipping points. Somewhere out there is a person who would ride if there was one less car on the road. Be that one less car. Then, there's the person waiting for two less cars, and so on.
