I, too, would encourage you to build them yourself, but I'd be happy to do it for you if you want someone experienced. I used to do it in bike shops, so you could say I was a professional. (Well, I was.)

Cheapest spokes I've found are $.05 for DT 14 ga from Colorado Cyclist, any quantity, any length. I assume they cut to length or have a huge inventory because of the number of wheels they build. That's with nipples. Butted 14/15/14 DT spokes from Jenson at $60 for 100 including nipples.
...its true....its fun.

Talk to Paul at Atomic Cycles in Van Nuys on Saticoy near Louise. He's a great guy, has tons of vintage stuff in his back room archive. He rebuilt one rear wheel for me that had a cracked Campy high flange hub. He also just finished a new wheel build for me with Legnano branded Campy High Flange hubs and CR18 rims. Turned out great, and his prices are more than fair. I supplied all materials. Heres the Legnano. Don't be put off by the looks of the shop, Paul will do it right. For $30 per wheel, it's not worth my frustration to roll my own.

This shop is in Hermosa. He rebuilt a wheel for me for 30 bucks before I started building my own. He also spent a good deal of time with me and his facing chasing tools one morning when I had a bottom bracket issue. Didn't charge me a dime fir that.

Build the wheels yourself if you can turn a screwdriver and follow sheldon's wheel building page as exact as you were baking a soufflé. Nothing to it, really.

I'm looking for a competent wheel builder. "Unfortunately" there's only one source for the 650B rims I'm looking for: Velo Orange. The hubs I'm using are used Campagnolo track hubs, so I'm effectively not buying anything from the builder other than spokes and nipples.
I live in Southern California and although it would be quite convenient for me to find somebody locally, I am willing to ship the hubs and rims anywhere in the country.
Can anyone recommend a qualified wheel builder?

With new rims and spokes its about as easy as wheelbuilding gets. Its not hard and you can at least lace the wheels up yourself without any special tools or equipment. Once laced just about any bike shop can bring em up to tension and true them for you.
Or if you find that the lacing went well and want to try your hand....you can get a wheel stand and a spoke wrench for the same or less $$ than someone would charge to do it for you.
....its a great skill to add to your set.

Well, he and I made an arrangement for me to build his wheels for him. He took a long time to ship his hubs, etc to me and I kinda lost interest. In fact, I actually forgot that the parts were out in my shop. Yep, I really got to get busy on this!
I do have to say that Just Bob has been incredibly patient about this.

Zombie thread or not, everybody needs a wheel build sometime, and Paul did great work for me. Also a great resource for "stuff". I picked up a longer square taper spindle, just yesterday. $5 ! Where else?

Its my old race bike, got it new in 1964. The 6 speed is a Suntour that I've had awhile. It's a 28t, and a tight fit in a 120mm frame. I know the Ultra 6 speed freewheels are out there, but they are usually over $100, and I had this one laying around. It just fits with a narrow 8 speed chain.
