First crash with another bike
Just had my first crash today in Downtown Manhattan with someone riding an ebike.
Going downhill he stopped to turn without signaling and when I noticed I braked but didn't fully stop on time and hit his back wheel.
Between the speed I still had and not clipping out on time I fell and landed on my hand while absolutely nothing happened to the other guy.
My hand is swollen but nothing major otherwise.
Need to practice emergency braking.

Good thing you were not hurt worse. I always ride with glove just in case I crash. The padding on the palms can save some skin.

where is there downhill in Downtown Manhattan? I can only think of the bridges. Ebikes will be the scourge of cyclists.

It almost happened once to me but with a car. Fortunately there was just enough room for me to squeeze through on the passenger side. Gotta pay attention.

Thank you. My plan was to see someone tomorrow if I didn't see any improvement but luckily the hand is feeling better today, the pain is much less and I can move my fingers more. Still swelling but that'll go down with more ice and time.

My three crashes in the past few years have resulted from other riders’ careless behavior. There’s only so much you can do to anticipate the utter stupidity and inconsiderate behavior of some riders. Just part of riding in urban areas.

Or, rather: blowing through stop signs is a threat to everyone.
Over the years, probably like most folks, I've seen people on skateboards, bicycles, motorcycles, in cars and trucks, and commercial vehicles blow through traffic controls at one time or another. Been fortunate, so far, to miss all of them, except a couple of close calls.
Too bad that, in cities, it's all but impossible to positively ID a cyclist or skateboarder (folks without a vehicle license plate), via traffic cams. Would be nice to have such folks hit hard with fairly expensive tickets for causing such threats. Perhaps, someday.

Those bikes are dang heavy! It would take a lot to get them to move from a hit.

Braking practise - yes, but also looking around and being aware. There's an old 2 seconds rule (or 3 if you want to be on the safe side) - always make sure you are at least 2 seconds behind the other traffic (unless filtering, overtaking and doing so at lower speeds and with even more caution). That gives you enough time to stop, and/or avoid if they come to a stop. Whatever the speed is, 2 (or 3) seconds "space" gives enough time to react and stop if needed.

Update:
Apparently I have a nondiplaced scaphoid fracture from the way I landed on my open hand.
Never would've guessed, pain has been low to moderate, no numbness, I can move my fingers, thumb and wrist okay.
Ended up going to check because typing at work was causing me some pain.
Now I have to decide whether I want to carry a cast around for three months or if I want a screw which would heal in a couple of weeks.

Heal quickly and be careful out there. Luckily I have yet to have a truly close call with an EBike but I do see their numbers steadily growing.
