I just added a front rack to my 85. Getting it ready to tackle a section of the Great Divide MTN bike route this summer. The bar set up is kind of clunky but seems to function well for the off road loaded touring on that trip with good control yet some optional hand positions for a long day in the saddle. Pretty much still all stock components.

Hey fellow Cimarron lovers-

I'm in a situation of possibly parting ways with my dirt drop '88 LE... I can't believe I'm actually posting this! I'm not there yet and this isn't a for sale ad, so please don't get upset. I'm seeking the opinions of this small community of Cimarron enthusiasts to see where you all stand on a restored but far from stock Cimo. I'm concerned that since it's not stock that.there will.be little to no interest. I'm not expecting someone to want the bike as built, please let me know what you think the complete bike is worth and what the frame/fork (headset & b.b. too) is worth to you... what you would realistically spend.

Yeah, I am really liking the On One Midge bars so far. It has performed really well on road as well as off-road.

The On One Midge is my favorite bar both on the trails and the pavement too. That said, the Jones H or J bars are super cool, I'd feel good recommending all 3 handlebars.

Im looking for spindle length and what chainring sizes came on the cimmarons. I have a frame im trying to get together. I cant tell what size rings would work for a triple. I can see some rubbing so whatever was there orginally must have been really close the the stays either from a chain throw or rubbing. I cant tell what was there originally but i know my road cranks are way too big. I put a 127mm sealed BB in the framset. I hope that will be long enough for whatever chainrings i come up with. Can you guys let me know what you are running. Id love to know.

In 1987 the Cimarron came with a Shimano Deore XT BB-M730 bottom bracket (with a 117.5mm spindle according to Velobase) and Biopace II 28-38-48T chainrings.

I rescued this Cimarron from a tangled mess of old walmart bikes. Looks like it might be an 88 and original other than the seat and grips. Right now its a bit of a basketcase. Someone managed to bend the hell out of small chainring by the crank, the cables on the left bar are cut, and the paint has plenty of character.

Everything that isn't obviously broken appears straight so I reckon it's worth putting back on the road. I might just pull off that ring, the front brake + derailleur, plus anything else unnecessary and bomb around with it like that for a while.

Any suggestions on what to do with this one? There are quite a few scratches on the paint and a little surface rust. Would you guys try to clean/touch up those spots or run it as it is? Anyone have an extra small ring for one of these laying around they would be willing to sell?

Here's round 1 of the the Cimarron clean up. Yanked the one ring, as well as the bits on the left side of the bar that were non-op for various reasons. Right now it's a 2 speed very manual shift in the front. Maybe I'll carry a stick or something to push the chain from one ring to the other. Borrowed a Belt saddle from an old Fuji and Schwinn grips from a Crosscut. The chrome fork was rusty and nasty but cleaned up well. I've never done paint work on a bike but I think I'll try removing the rust spots and touching it up.

I picked up this '85 Cimarron from @fender1 back in March or April. He had done a great job brush-painting it with a Rustoleum green.

I decided to build it up as a grocery-getter (I live in Uptown Chicago with no car), weekend tripper with the GF, and possible winter-commuter.

The Maxxis tires were a great buy at $34 each. Very supple sidewalls, just a tiny bit of tread. The poor man's Compass RTP?

All in all - very happy with how it turned out. I'm running it in friction mode because I've never been able to successfully set up indexed shifting without the derailleur falling between some cogs and giving that clicky clacky sound.

I have 3 Cimarrons in my stable: a 1985, and 2 "Leons" from 1988 including this one which is, and, has been, my daily mode of transport for 25 years. She and I both have battle scars, but, we keep on keepin' on.

Here's a supposedly '89 Cimarron. I had a mechanic build it up from parts of a previous hybrid bike he assembled as well.
Looks to be the biggest size 22"? It is painted black, and uses 700C wheels with Schwalbe Marathon Plus 35c Tires.
Bike rides like a dream. I just love the way steel rides.

Man that bike looks crazy tall rollin' on 700c wheels with 35 tires! Did your mechanic have to dremel or file out the brake pad mounts on the v-brake arms? I tried running Shimano XTR and XT v-brakes on my Cimarron with 700c wheels but had no luck. It would have required removing 1/8th of an inch to all 4 brake arms and that did not interest me in the least!

Honestly I didn't ask him about the V-brakes thing, the bike was built somewhere in 2014, probably I could ask him about that but he lives far from where I live. The thing I know is that the fork is not the stock one which came with the bike. Can't complain about anything on the bike, other than maybe it is a bit larger for my 185cm height. Probably the thing I will change is the wheelset, the rear keeps on breaking spokes, just out of curiousity the wheels are Araya 700C with supposedly were made in the 1990's, when I got the bike (the original one made from a Kinesis, an aluminum frame) the wheels were new, somewhere here in Guadalajara Mexico there's a warehouse with all kinds of bike parts and frames that's where this Cimarron came from.

The 21" 87 Cimarron is no longer in my stable, and I am now left with my size correct 18" 87 Cimarron. The frame was just too big for me, but it went to a good home.
