The firm pads rotate- no bearings, & the spring-loaded lever changes the space between the pads from ~2.5mm to 4.5mm.
The whole thing is heavy, over 2 lbs.

Ran out to the garage to look at my Newborn caulking gun and - lo and behold - it has a Spout Cutter hole/mechanism! No idea.

I did a quick search of the company name and as you probably already know, they dealt with photographic equipment and supplies. Since the company was established in 1900's ish…. My guess that has something to do with processing or holding film.

TIL that the pull tab on a zipper, when pushed down flat onto the zipper after zipping up (like on a pair of pants), will stop the zipper from opening under pressure. A particular pair of pants I had, that were maybe 1 size too small, kept opening up on me and my wife said to make sure the tab was down, and I called bull***** on her, only to find out it's true, it only took 48 years of pants wearing to learn this.

All the things you can do with a 14-1 painters tool is mind blowing....my Mom was a single parent of 3 and learned and taught the 3 kids many skills when we were young and one of the things she passed along was make sure you have this tool in your box.

I've been using pipe vice stands like this since the '70s and could never figure out what the screw in the top was for.
Some time in the last couple of years I found out that it is used with a cut piece of pipe to brace the stand off the ceiling.

On a related note, when I was about 4 yrs old, I had one of those thick carton folding 'book' for kids with big picture on each 'page' and one of them was town square with shops that had signs above the entrance marking what that particular shop was selling. One had sign that said 'MEAT' and looking at it one day, I suddenly connected the individual letters sounds together and I read my first word ever. I learned to read fast after that. Actually it wasn't in English as I was born in what was then Czechoslovakia and the spelling was more 'learning to read friendly', that is, not like English spelling which is mostly different from how you pronounce the letters when you speak.
That universal painters tool has one function not listed on that website. If you sink drywall nail too deep, or in our modern times, the drywall screw went in a bit deep and broke the paper, creating a burr around the screw head, or more often, when the screw didn't catch and you removed it, leaving empty hole, you then use the handle end of that painters tool (it has that metal cap with nice rounded corners) to press in the hole edges so that your broad knife doesn't bump over them when you are applying thin coating to fill them in.
Sometimes when I painted for other people, they were asking about my brush/roller spinner tool and were gaping when I showed them what it is for.
