Fuji Espree

My winter bike is now a Fuji Espree. It came with a 26.4 seat post which is too small. I tried to install a 27 as I "recalled" the correct size was 27 but that was too tight (had to use a rubber mallet to tap back out). Surprised me as that would mean 26.6 (unlikely) or 26.8.

My concern is that PO might've tried to crank in tye bolt to get the 26.4 to fit and now the tube is not round. I don't want to buy a seat post and get the wrong size. I checked but Mr Google doesn't list seat post size for Espree.

My caliper battery died so can't measure interior diameter of seat tube to exact standard.

Does anyone know the correct size seat post for the Esprere?

Buy a used 26.8, like an SR Laprade, and sand it down if it doesn't fit.

Gotta be careful, 'cause it's easy to sand too much. What I like to do is use 80 grit paper, and when I get it close to fitting, switch to 600 grit to both correctly size it and remove the 80 grit scratches.

My '83 Espree was a 26.6.

Cheapest route would be to buy a new battery for your calipers.

Thank you. I will buy a new battery, either today or tomorrow.
My main concern was that if the PO compressed the top of the seat tube by over tightening the bolt to fit a 26.4, then maybe the correct size post would now seem too large and I'd be chasing a wrong size.
I have 26.8 SR Laprade in storage so if I can't find a local 26.6, I'll sand the Laprade.

It's easy to open the top of the seat tube up a little. I use a large SnapOn screwdriver inserted in the slot just below the top edge and I gently pry it open until the sides of the slot are ever so slightly wider than the lower portion.

Exactly what I just did. Found a no-name 26.6 post. Tight going in so buffed post and "adjusted" the gap. 26.6 and Mr. Brooks are ready to ride.

Thank you again.
