Stocking stuffer for 10 year old.
My Grandson has outgrown his BMX and needs a bigger bike and he wants a MTB. He likes models, puzzles, etc. and his parents and I came up with a scheme to stimulate his natural mechanical abilities AND reward him for his string of straight A's in school. They bought him a WalMart bike to get him by but on Christmas morning there will be a 1-1/8" threadless headset in his stocking. He will be puzzled and that's when I'll take him out to a NOS Marin Bolinas Ridge frame (technically a hybrid) and a pile of new MTB parts. We'll explain to him it's a "puzzle" and I'll put it together with his help. His parents want him to learn what goes into something like that and hopefully give him a better appreciation for it than if he was just handed the bike. They will probably pass his WalMart bike down to a cousin or donate it.

Awesome. My son gets bike tools as stocking stuffers every year. He built his own bike when he was twelve and just got his first job at REI in the “action sports” shop (bike and ski).

I was gonna do this but got yelled at. lol The kid knows about the bike I stripped it and repainted it colors he wanted. I suggested lets just throw all these new parts in a box and he can get them for Christmas but no. I am now gonna override that NO based on "grandpa' advice.

Once you can trust the kid not to stare at the thing til he runs into a fence go get him a cheap bike computer. Kids go nuts for that kind of stuff in my experience...

Well, we finally got the build done. We had a great time and he was seriously interested in how things went together. It was a blast, however our photographer got distracted talking recipes with our D-I-L so the photo record is incomplete. I also had to deal with their Chocolate Lab "retrieving" my tools LOL.

My son had no interest in mechanical things until he started riding. He got a job in a bike shop and learned to wrench. When he bought a carbon fiber bike I gave him a torque wrench. Now he's a home owner and just yesterday I talked him through an oil change on his car.
Last summer my 3 year old grand daughter and I did a birdhouse project. Gotta start them early.
