When things go just right: Everest freewheel + Regina America

Those of you following my Match Paramount build will know that I had my eye on this ultra-lightweight Everest freewheel - missing one cog - for some time.

I picked it up from the LBS today, and proceeded to try something:

I've had that 8-speed Regina America 1992 at left for a while; its second-to-lowest cog was cracked when one of the LBS's cast it off:

The 12t cog - which would otherwise thread into the damaged 13t - was fine:

So, out of curiosity, I tried spinning it onto the Everest. Eureka:

The threads mesh perfectly. Who would have known? The America cogs refuse to thread onto conventional Regina Oros - I never would have expected it to actually fit the Everest. Lucky!

Yes - thanks for catching it. I spun the Regina cog onto the Everest freewheel - not the other way around.

Sure cleaned up nice:

Be careful with that new setup, too. I stripped/cracked the two screw-on cogs on two separate Everest Nova freewheels a few years back; one was during a race, resulting in an interesting anatomical meeting with my top tube.

I have one more left with zero miles and I plan to keep it that way. Those things are notorious for cracking right along the threads under load.

Interesting. I was worried about using a steel cog on the outside for that very reason; looks as if I might as well worry about the original aluminum equipment just the same.

Funny thing, I wonder if the Regina America's second cog - the one that is broken - is a drop-in fit to the Everest, as with the first. If that is the case, one could conceivably create a slightly more reliable setup w/two Regina cogs.

FWIW, my Zeus 2000 freewheels use steel cogs in the threaded position.

Odd, I seem to remember a friend's Zeus 5-speed with aluminum cogs throughout. Might have to ask him to bring it by again.
