Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike taken by the police

How much grief do you normally get when you try to get your bicycle back after you are in a single person accident while riding your bike and taken to the hospital, and the police keep your bicycle.

I wrecked last week and the cops have my road bike. I am a little less than pleased about it. I was taken to a hospital unconscious to get stitched up and was lucid maybe 2 days later, but they don't open till monday. So I am sitting here worrying what my bike looks like

Glad you're ok.
Are you sure the police have it? A friend was in a crash a few years ago and the day after the accident I drove him to the fire station that was nearest the crash site to retrieve his bike. Luckily it wasn't mangled too bad. It still fit on my roof rack.

A lot of things break smashing into a car at 30+ mph, not just carbon.

The police are usually pretty good about getting it back to you.

In my accident three weeks ago, the sheriff deputy took my bike to my house as I was carried away in the ambulance. He actually knew how to remove the front wheel to get it into his patrol car. The bike arrived home safely with no additional damage, I am sure the police will take care of your bike.

Call the cops.

Don't worry about the bike. It's replacable.

I'm not sure you're completely lucid yet. Don't stress over something of which you have no control. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Be happy two days of hallucinations are over and that you will ride again. There will always be another bike, there is only one you.

They have to clear the roadway. And if it is a single vehcile accident (that means only you) the bike was removed to clear the roadway. And its probably at the city yard waiting for you.

They can take away your license if you have seizures...do they do the same with a bike? I might suggest avoiding high speed activities that could leave you dead if you black out. Good family friend died about a year and a half ago when he had a seizure behind the wheel (he had his license back after no seizures for a few years).

You have seizures? That is interesting. Do you have warnings signs when an episode is about to happen?

So you'd rather they just left it on the side of the road for somebody else? What's the beef here?

OP: when the meds wear off a bit more, you'll realize that any accident that does this to you is going to MANGLE your bike. good luck, and take pix of the aftermath if possible.

JB Weld should fix that right up. Use duct tape to hold everything while it cures.

I remember some of your prior posts. You've been in the hospital before for other cycling related injures, no? Either way, hope your bike isn't too messed up.
