So, my wife's friend's hubby (the one that dodged my ride invites for years and aired some odd notions on training and racing) has solicited my advice on a bike re-build. I'm really having a hard time knowing what to say and how to say it.
Basically, he got his first proper road bike a year and a half ago, or so, a 105 CAAD. He decided to go rim brakes because he thinks that weight is paramount to performance and that discs would only be a weight penalty and wouldn't benefit him at all (remember that this is the guy that thinks a big factor in getting spit out the back of his only cat5 race because his competitors had nicer race rigs than him).
Now he wants to upgrade "for more performance," and he wants to stick with rim brakes so that he can carry over some of his components (105 and some middling wheels) and get the most BftB. He wants an Emonda SLR because it's very light and one of the few high-end framesets available in a rim brake configuration these days. In the end, he's looking at $4k out of pocket which would get him a ~16lb bike with a mix of 105/Ultegra (which he could later upgrade to DA "for more performance"). He's noted that there's a vacuum of rim brake framesets yet this apparently hasn't resulted in a lightbulb moment for him.
Oh, and he wants to upgrade to carbon wheels sooner rather than later and he's a flatlander that recently moved to the Appalachian foothills and probably has zero descending skillz.
This is all madness, to me.

Out and back so there is no tailwind advantage.

20 mile out-and-back wouldn't be hard to put together around here. 10 mile tailwind in the second half would be fun.

Complete bike, electronic shifting and sub-15lbs for $5k... I would rather have Shimano, but that still makes more sense to me than $4k and cannibalizing the current bike for a 105/Ultegra mix. I'll offer that up as an option, too - thanks!

That's what I was going to recommend to him - the Expert (Ultegra Di2 build) supposedly comes in at ~15lbs for a little over $5k (and he could keep the CAAD whole, either using it for a beater or more easily selling it to partially offset the new bike). So much more sensible to me.

As much as I love the idea of my Trek as a long distance bike, I've got a feeling that once I move East I'll want something a (whole lot) lighter.
If I have the opportunity I'll likely make the move to discs. Year old CAAD framesets seem to be a sweet BFTB. And they seem to take 28s plus have fender mounts. Not sure if both at the same time though.

To me, there's an uncanny-valley-like curve to the "should my next bike be disc brakes?" question. If you don't have a big investment in rim brake road bikes and wheels, yeah - moving to discs makes a lot of sense to me. If you have a number of good rim brake wheelsets but limited bikes to swap them among, sticking with rims is sensible. Once you have a fleet of rim brake bikes and wheels, going disc on the next makes sense to me, too - you're already well beyond that, "but these previous purchased are going to wallow in disuse" argument.

Sure, I can see that.

We don’t have a lot of cases here. One of those cases was a remote kid and the other they sent the entire class home for 2 weeks. I meant their specific elementary school, not the entire district.
Our classrooms are half size now with the kids 9-12 feet apart. Windows are open and the school put in a new ventilation system. I think we will be back to remote only after winter break.
