Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Haleakala - photo update

Following up from my previous thread here https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycli...haleakala.html, I did the climb last Sunday, taking the typical route from Paia up Baldwin Ave to Olinda to Hanamu to the Kula marketplace. Then up the Haleakala highway. Here's a few pics of the ride:

Did the traditional sea level shot at sunrise.

Made it to the Kula marketplace ~3300 ft.

Through the 20 odd switchbacks before the park entrance, which was the toughest part for me as the temp was in the low 90's.

Near the visitor's center met a couple from Idaho ~ 7000 ft

Then alone again for the last 3,000 ft to the summit.

The last kilometer...

And made it!

Which couldn't have happened without my super supportive wife driving SAG and taking these pics.

Looks like you had lots of fun!

I laughed when I saw the "last kilometer" picture, I was doing the same after 9000ft elevation

Thanks everyone. Certainly the toughest ride ever for me, but also exhilarating. It was a bucket list ride.

Yeah, I was spent by then. Took a break at the lower parking lot with a Coke and Julia's banana bread before getting back on the saddle for that last stretch.

I "lost" the lowest gear near the Kula Marketplace when I finally needed it, but a simple tuning of the cable barrel adjuster fixed that, though not perfect. I also brought a second set of wheels in case the wind was a factor, but it wasn't too bad until at about 8,000 ft, and by then through the switchbacks it was either a headwind or a tailwind.

Thanks. But no. My wife had been so kind in tagging along, and she wanted to explore the trails to the craters at the summit so we did that afterwards and drove down close to sunset by then.

I find it hard to grok that that's actually 3 km...up. Not sideways, but...up. How is that possible?

That climb's also more than 1,000 metres aka 1 freakin' kilometre higher than where the pros go up on both Mont Ventoux and Alpe d'Huez.

Congrats. Great pictures as well. Did you get yourself a great congratulatory dinner?

Haleakala is on my bucket list as well. Very envious! I do worry a bit when all the pictures I see are expensive bike and my bike is definitely not in the weight weenie category. Extra wheels? What's that? I would also have to do it solo with no support (so need to descend as well). But I will do it!

Make sure to read the original thread mpath linked above, if you haven't already! There are lots of good advices in there, for both solo and assisted rides up Haleakala. Bottom line though: Don't worry too much about the bike, just slowly grind it up the hill. Water though, that's what you need to make sure you have enough of!

Looking forward to reading your own report when you finally get around to going there

Last time I was at Haleakala, we drove up but hiked out (eastward, down to the ocean).

Tough ride, up the thing. Nicely done.

Did she take photos of the crater trails?

I nominate this for thread of the month. Do we have that? Anyway, it deserves it.

Great pics and looks like quite a lifetime experience. Definitely on my list of things to do if I ever make it out that way.
