its funny how those that cant make fun of those that do....I doubt most bf posters could do a triathalon...an iron man triathlete makes us all look stupid and pathetic they are deserving of our respect

I have much more respect for someone showing off the evidence of their competition than I do for the vain fool that feels the need to instantly remove reflectors and/or dork discs from a bike.

My twins rode the Strider bike race at the final stage of the Tour of California last year. Little brats still haven’t taken the numbers off the front. To what authority should I report them?

Those days are long gone and so are the numbers.
Got nearly my whole garage door covered with those. Some of the bigger organizers like J&A and Rock&Roll have custom ones with the event logo, date, etc printed on them. My kids are starting to get in to Mile runs, so I'm adding theirs' up, too. I also have the bow number (stole it) from my last Dad Vail regatta, along with a (retired) sweep from my HS club boat., hung on the wall, next to my surfboard.

All that stuff is in the garage, thou. Showing up to a ride with a race number on says 'race me' to anyone who's looking for 'motivation' good or bad. Bring your game, or be ready for the possibility of serious embarrassment.

Earned that number? You mean by paying a fee and participating in a race. Anyone can do that. They may not win, they may not finish, they may quit a couple minutes in, but it's not hard to enter a race.

I've even seen guys sometimes show up on vintage rides with old Eroica numbers still tied with jute twine on their old bikes. As long as we're on a rant, what's up with the guys in Beemers or Volvos screwing a California plate on top of a longer Euro plate, so the Euro plate sticks out a couple inches past the real one? If you got your car on European delivery, great, hope you had a nice trip, but you don't need both plates. Funny, you never see this on Porsches, Ferraris, Mercedes, Lambos, only Beemers and Volvos, but, even Hondas????🤔

My question is why don't some of these "tri-geeks" maintain their bikes and clean the urine and sweat off of them more often? So often I see multi thousand dollar bikes with really nice parts and such either corroded at parts, with dry squeaky chains or still sporting the bodily fluids on them from the race 5 months ago. Racing is fine and good and having a sticker or race number is fine by me it is more the mistreatment of the bikes that bothers me.

If I had the money some of these "tri-geeks" have I would have someone looking at my bike at least every six months and maybe doing one overhaul a year and maybe pay someone to clean it regularly and lube it. If you have the money why not?

I've kept a 0.0 sticker on my truck for years. And I DO run.

People around here that race the local crit series have an assigned numbered plate on their bike for races. Some remove them when training and some don't. Not a big deal either way. Its usually noobs that fall into the first category.
Some people feel more motivated with a number on. Many people want to identify with the culture whether tri or cycling or whatever. Just doing an event that requires a number is a big accomplishment for some. I say let them enjoy it! What's the harm?
If they start acting like they "are somebody" around you, let your legs share some perspective with them.
I used to work with a guy that liked to do a certain popular double century in our area. He practically built a shrine to it in his office with his medals and memorabilia for everyone to see. It was fine (sort of ) until his personal insecurity motivated him to start being critical of and taking verbal pot-shots at others--he wasn't that good. Just be sure your not that guy... He's a jerk! And a fairly lonely one at that.
As the old Belgian proverb states, "The loudest man in the room is the weakest."

My mother-in-law passed away this week, and more than ever I am beginning to appreciate the wisdom in this.

On our LBS group rides, anyone showing up with a number on their bike and/or helmet is unmercifully mocked by all the other riders.

My kids have numbers on their bikes from a youth tri they did last August. They got some extra stickers from the organization and slapped those on a couple extra bikes, as well as gave them to neighborhood friends who slapped some on their bikes too.
Im pretty sure my oldest still has a number on her helmet too.

Looks like some are still kids at heart. No harm no foul. Being proud of what you do in your free time is great.

Maybe it's a subtle warning that their turn signals don't work.
