3 * 9 crankset with 165 crank arms
So I have recently discovered shorter cranks are a godsend for my knees. While I can source the latest 105 groupsets with these 165 cranks I am struggling to retrofit my Surly LHT which is set up to be 3 * 9 speed. I don’t really want to go the expense of changing cassettes/shifters etc. so keen to replace the crankset on a ‘sort of like for like’ basis.
I really like the range of gears that my Shimano SLX M660 3 44/32/22 triple provides me for touring.
I know that the SLX triple was never available with 165 cranks.
Is anyone aware of a triple 9-speed chainset with 165 as an option that I can watch out for on ebay? Is there a way of hacking the chainrings I already have with alternative crank arms?
Any other suggestions?
Yours in hope

Any triple will work fine with a 9 speed chain. "165 triple crankset" on ebay showed a lot of options.

How long a crank do you need to start with to end up with 165s? 185?

You can buy Sugino cranksets directly from Sugino in Japan, and you can get a triple with 165mm crank arms, but their small chainrings only go to 24 tooth.

Also check out SPA CYCLES. They have various versions using the SPA name that are very good quality and basically copies of the Sugino's and less expensive. You'll need to get a square taper BB and the main differences between their different models of cranks are the quality aluminum used for the arms and also grade of chainrings which can be customized. I have the Origin8 triple crankset on my son's bike:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/185550483117
It works fine with the 9 speed Tiagra drivetrain on that bike.

Here is another 165mm 3X crankset: https://www.performancebike.com/shim...ax090/p1277469 It's a Tiagra so a bit lighter and the 10-speed will work fine with a 10-speed chain and a 9-speed cassette. The problem with it and the Sora referenced above is that neither will take a granny chainring smaller than 30T despite the claims that they have a 74mm BCD for the smallest chainring.
The Sora has a 4-arm, asymmetric spider so conventional 74mm rings won't fit. The Tiagra does not have a 74mm BCD for the granny, it has a 92mm BCD that is bolted to the middle chainring similar to the old TA cranks. It will not take anything smaller than 30T.

You don't need a 10 speed chain for a 10 speed crank. 9 is fine.

Check out the Sugino XD600 in 152mm if you can find them. I love my shorties!

Shimano XT and others cranks were made in 165. They are rare, however.
