DHL Passport Requirement?

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience.

I ordered about $200 worth of stuff from ProBikeKIt and got the free shipping. I then received an email from DHL asking for a scanned copy of my passport.

Is this legit? Not sure why they need my passport. I ordered from chain reaction before and never had issues like this.

Thanks.

I sure as hell would not. I’d call the vendor and ask why ?

Never had that happen before. That is an odd ball, probably would double check with seller and DHL and confirm. It could be some new 'Rona Regulations.

If you look at the email source I’ll bet you find the email is not really DHL. My guess is that’s it’s a total coincidence that you received the email after ordering. I get fake DHL emails all the time.

You *MUST* send them everything they ask for, right after you send me the balance of that $328 million from the Nigerian prince in exile...

I've placed 3 orders recently with Wiggle (UK) who ships DHL. I place the order, pay, they ship, it arrives here (USA) a few days later. Period.

Sounds like a scam to me. I sure as hell wouldn't send them anything, especially a copy of my passport.

With a shipment coming to me, I've no problem showing my govt-issued photo ID to prove I'm me. At time of pick-up, at place of pick-up.

But there's NO WAY that I'm going to allow a scan to be made, certainly not anything remotely or digitally.

Fact is, an ID is for identification purposes. An a passport's for ID and international travel ... which only a person needs, not a package. There's simply no need for permanent storage of images or scans of it, in some third-party vendors databases. Not if they want my business.

Folks might want to read some of the reviews. https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.probikekit.com

Reviews list issues with customs duties, delays and returns. Out of 1561 reviews, 21% are considered poor or bad. . LIke anything, YMMV, but I also think the lockdowns are contributing to the negative reviews.

The passport request sounds like it could be a possible scam.

Scam. Some people don’t have passports - then what? check that email address which probably is mask named DHL but address is different, and report to vendor, DHL, and your email servicer.

Not necessarily a scam. Call DHL to verify.

Definitely sound like a scam to me.
Why would they need such documentation?

What country do you live in? I can imagine some vendors would require IDs to determine proper tax or customs fees; however I can't see the shipping company having this responsibility. I think it's a scam. Contact the vendor or DHL.

some country’s custom might require buyer identification, or custom will reject and send the item back for incomplete application.

As I used to tell my grandma the FBI and DHL don't send people emails or call you, if they want something they will show up to your door or give you a court summons.

I can not see any legitimate reason for asking for a scan of a passport. I however can think of lots of reasons for illegitimate reasons for wanting a scan of a passport. No way I'd do it.

Cheers

Sounds scammy to me. Why would you need a passport for a mail order?

I have no idea how DHL operates, but I definitely would not be emailing a scanned image of my passport to them.

I might scan the cover of my passport (the part that says "United States of America") and send that in... They didn't tell you which part to scan in, now did they?

I was told that my name matched a name on the denied party list. That is crazy.

They just want the name and DOB of my passport. I can block all other sensitive information. Not sure if I want to go through all the trouble to save a few bucks.

What's a denied party list? Someone who can't buy stuff, or someone who cannot be shipped to? You deny buyers because they don't pay, but you've probably already paid since it got to the shipper.

There are a lot of people in the US who dont have a passport. Whats being required is impossible for many, so the scam detector goes off.
